Aliens 2

At the beginning of Aliens II The Nostromo escape pod is captured by a deep space salvage ship and uses a laser to cut through the hatch.

After the hatch is cut up a scanning laser is sent in to look for life forms.

The special effects used by that laser produces a plane of laser light. Is there a device that can take the laser beam and oscillate it rapidly back and forth in a linear fashion to product this effect.
