Advantage of pulsed laser?

What are the advantages of having a laser "pulsed"?

Is it simply a matter of being able to supply more power in a pulse as opposed to a constant beam?

(sorry if this is a basic question, new to the forums, just trying to learn)

Main advantage is that you can increase the power a lot when the output pulse has a limited duration. It's has a lot of medical applications for instance.

It's also used in basic science research, the compressed pulse as short as femtoseconds or attoseconds that's an area right now.

But there are lasers that can only be operated in a pulsed mode (CW operation is not sustainable). Such a laser is not very useful since it would oscillate in a single pulse and shut itself down, no chance for telecommunication, etc.
 
In low gain dpss systems like the 473nm process the diode is often pulsed to obtain low output powers. I believe it has to do with the lifespan of the crystal in this case. When a pulsed laser is combined with a PWM Spirograph you get some cool patterns.
 
one reason for Pulsed lasers is due to the large peak pulse energy and in material processing that's very usefully for blasting material away from surfaces .
