Weird problems with browser, concern over whether a virus or a hacker getting into machine.

That does sound strange. You could try the TOR Browser and see if anything changes. The first time I used it Google thought I was in Germany. It really bounces you around the planet. PogoPlug also sells a HW version called SafePlug (which allows you to use your own preferred browser and settings and not have to copy all your links into the TOR browser).
I've not heard of someone able to change your display settings but people with enough motive/smarts it wouldn't surprise me.
And BTW - To reset your IP address cycle your router power. Your IP address may actually be dynamic (i.e. not static) but it could stay on an address for some time until/unless you power cycle your router.

Do you have security software?

I would guess it's just a coincidence. Is it possible the Firefox popup was from some malware that had already been installed from some other bad link? I have never heard of this happening before in my 8+ years on the forum.

I don't know about the settings issues, but when I booted up my computer this morning and started Firefox, I got a new tab saving it had been updated.
Firefox now shows V. 43.0.1. They've added something called pocket which is apparently a save-for-later service. I haven't explored it yet.

The US government has mandated that all hard drive manufactures install a secret backdoor into the HD basic operating system, so even if you wipe your windows or whatever gui or operating system clean then ones who know can always get in, that's how we sabotaged the uranium centrifuges in Iran via the stuxnet worm.
All the major security software has to allow the government intrusions, searchlight was an old one that we have all heard of, and it can't alert you the customer even when it sees it, it's been told to allow it before you bought it.
So when hackers discover one of big brothers secret protected portals we are all open books.
When all chip memory pc become common self built units may be able to avoid this, but it's a never ending tug-o-war as every app or incoming anything can make changes because of our open architecture, it's like I.T. support fixing your problem while you are on the phone with them your pc is buzzing away as they fix your problem.
If you have sensitive work data or plans for an invention you don't want stolen I would put it onto a 2nd laptop that never goes online and physically open it up and remove the wifi antenna, it's tiny, because even if you put your laptop into airplane mode disable wifi it's not really disabled to incoming instructions that can tell it to transmit.
From our cellphones that are well know portals to the coming automobile software that we are not allowed to tamper with we are the transparent ones, and yes, dirty fingered hackers will exploit the system, there are overseas sites that you don't want to visit, they offer free entertainment, but they specialize in reading your machine and stealing your info. Thankfully modern security includes a network of users who report troubled sites and keep them short lived landmines.
I was amazed at how ignorant Hillary was but I understand it, she used a small company to house her hidden server thinking she could intimidate and control them, she would not trust a company or person smarter than herself that she did not feel like she could control, but she did not have any idea how the system worked, if not for guardian angles all her dirty little email secrets would be public, just imagaine the Chinese and Russians laughing, just imagine the strings they can pull later if she's elected

Sorry to bring a dying thread back, but this honestly just sounds like a display error. Back when I went to LAN parties I had a friend who always liked to mess with the display cable, and my screen would do the exact same thing you're describing. Is it the entire screen or just the browser?

Sounds like the application "f.lux" to me - which is supposed to shift the colour temperature of your display towards the red end at night. Supposedly helps you get to sleep...
That's something you'd have had to have installed manually though - or someone else would have had to have installed manually (your wife maybe?)
Check in the tray down next the clock on the task bar (I'm assuming you're running windows!) for the f.lux icon.

Windows 7 (And I'm assuming the same for XP, 8 and 10) goes by size - so restore points are only allowed to take up a certain amount of space. Once that limit is reached the oldest restore point is deleted to make space for the new ones.
