Been reading around the various sub forums here and see so many posts about lightsaber this and lightsaber that. One guy in the red lasers forum was actually trying to build a lightsaber with an array of red diodes. These folks really need to learn their Star Wars canon. First off the fictional lightsaber is NOT A LASER. Beams of coherent light no matter how powerful would just pass through each other. The lightsaber is a focused and looped plasma stream contained within a confinement field. Theoretically such a stream contained within a magnetic confinement field with the intensity depicted in THIS WORK OF FICTION would resist each other. If you want a real lightsaber I suggest you start working on a way to produce the power to generate a couple of tens of thousands of kilowatts. Now fit that in a device the size of a flashlight. Once you do that you are over the hump. The confinement field, confinement field control circuits, and focusing systems should be easy if you can accomplish that.

You call it silly and then go on to discuss the feasibility of it

In addition this has nothing to do with general information about lasers.

How about if we leave lightsabers to the star wars forums?

Peace,
dave
