What would be the pitfalls of making a >1W 445 build in a waterproof host but have the stock (ar coated) glass left in?
I'm guessing reduced output, reflection back into the diode, possibly too much temp differential in the glass itself might even crack it.
Any thoughts on this?
Tried searching it for a while but no joy.

This host with a heatsink might be an idea with a low duty cycle

But I would likely use a larger "headed" host for better runtimes

I think you are over-estimating the power of ~1W.
It's not even close to enough to crack glass.

Depending on the coating, thickness, and quality of the glass, you will lose between 3-8% of your power. Reflection in this case should not cause any problems.

Go for it. Build the laser and report your findings.

Sound promising, orders for hosts (3) have been sent ^_^
Now the tedious monotony of waiting on Hongkong postal workers begins
