A true Survival laser

^^^No problem, just that it's a relatively short thread.... You can easily miss important info if you just read the first post and jump to the last one.

If its purely a survival product, why not just power it from primary lithium cells? They have a shelf life of over a decade, and will probably provide ample power if they are allowed to be the size/weight of a solar panel or hand crank :)

As for the choice of laser: It seems that this should be able to take a beating, so DPSS is not a good choice (apart from its temperamental behaviour with temperature). A 445 with focusable lens would be fine, and can start your campfire too.

Doenst look very stable to be - you can see the laser flicker as you crank the generator. Depending on the driver you are using that could mean bad news for the survival of the laser diode.

na the crank was just an add on of course its not stable, the faster i crank the brighter it would be... i just clipped the crank generator on there... just to proove the concept, not to make the laser work...

one day i will make a crank laser... but the generator will charge a battery which will power the laser thru a driver. that will be safer for the diode.

make sence :)

Surely it would be - the batteries offer a good buffer for the crank energy :)

ok now ive run into an issue i dont understand...

i finally got my battaries frim china... whats it been 2 months...

anyways, i put the battery in and it turns the laser on... i click the button to turn the laser off... but when i click it back on it wont come on... if i remove the battery and put it back the laser comes back on... but only till i turn it off, then it wont come back on...

any suggestions...

Hey I think I know you from somewhere!

in my next generation of this laser... it will be waterproof ans incorperate a crank generator aswell as the solar... just incase you use your solar power and u see a rescue helicopter fly by, you can then crank it :)

and some update on the current version: i boughe a non rechargable 3.6v AA and stuck it in to test theory... but there was an issue... somehow... it was leaking juice, in the off position the laser was on dim (about what the 1.2v put out) in the on position it shot quite powerfully... sooo i had to figure this out... upon alot of testing there was a resistor that made this happen... somehow... so i replaced the resistor with a wire... and it turns on and off at full power...

still waiting on my rechargable 3.7v AA i ordered... but so far its working well, recharges the 1.2 and fires stronger beams at 3.6 (still not a 1w beam... but still cool)

What does your circuit look like? If the switch is in the wrong place and there is no reverse current diode the solar panel will basically turn into a resistor when there's no light and the battery will feed back through the panel.
