will this pointer work with a AAA battery, and if so what would you estimate the power to be? i want to get one and if it would drop to <5-10 mw i would consider it safe enough for indoor pointing

yes i have, i cannot justify spending that on a 5 mw laser, but if a 30mw laser doubles as a 5 mw laser in the same package, at 20 dollars(with battery) i could justify spending thatNever tried mine out with a AAA, now that I think about it I should have done so before selling it. I doubt it would run off of a AAA cell.
An ebay 5mW 532nm pen laser runs off of AAA's. Though most of them are over-spec and they can go as high as 100mW, so it may not be safe for the application you want.
Have you looked at some of the lasers pointers from laserglow? They sell quality lasers and they will be on spec: Laserglow Technologies - Handheld Lasers, Alignment Lasers and Lab / OEM Lasers
i dont mind that the paint chips, as i was thinking about stripping the paint and plasti-dipping it. i have no use for a case either. i was thinking that if the 5mw version of this would run from a AAA it would be cheaper to make them both the same laser, then bin them and sell the better lasers as 30mw with 10440 and the lesser as 5mw for AAA. this is what lead me to think that the driver can run on 1.5v.I do have those 532nm laser modules, and those will not run on 1.5V. They don't even run on 3V that well. They work best at 4V.
Also, laserglow may be pricey but their lasers are the best. The quality on the 10440 532nm laser isn't great. The paint chips off easily (a chip came off the one I had in the mail!), they don't feel as good in the hand as a quality laser. Laserglow is also a North American company so you get top notch service and fast shipping.\
Edit: I'm also a sucker for the nice cases their lasers come in
