A very cheap crude but effective handheld scanner to make those tunnel pictures we all see.

HOw does that even work? I dont really know anything about scanners or things but is that the thing that tells the power level of the laser?

No it creates a tunnel effect with your laser and a smoke machine just like this below......

so does that mean that you have to point your laser up? or down? How does the smoke become red. I really have no idea how all this stuff works.

I hear everone saying they want a fog or smoking machine for cool effects but how do you do that?

The mirror spins and you point your laser at the mirror and a fog machine highlights the beam.
My fog machine has broken but the video attached here will show you what happens to your beam. i knocked up just as i finshed reading your post ::)

Nice, I like how it seems to be very portable.

Sniper, the scanner is just a mirror on a motor, at a slight angle so as it spins it shoots the beam off at different angles. Shine a laser onto that and you get it projecting a circle.
Getting a fog machine works when you pay the company and they send it to you :D. You need fog juice, and then they will disperse the fog in the air. When there's fog, the laser can look many many many many times brighter than without fog, so when its scanning in a circle like that you can see the cone it creates. Also as the fog swirls around in the air you can get something called a "liquid sky" effect, named as it seems like the fog is aerial liquid.
