9V killed my PHR =[

I had it hooked up to a Rckstr V3, and when I used my 6V 4x AA battery holder, it was completely fine, in fact, sometimes the power went up a good bit and it could burn stuff, but only sometimes. Then I leanred that 9V would be much better, so I went and bought a Duracell 9V battery, put it in it's holder, then connected it to my driver, after about 2 tries (ony getting a millisecond of light on each try because it was hard to keep it there) it 'died' it didn't pop, or anything... It just won't work now, not with the 4 pack, or the 9V neither of them... So I don't know what happened. I was told I should use 9V, and even read something from another thread saying 9V would work, but not great....yet 9V killed my diode :cryyy:

What current was your Rkcstr set at? It shouldn't have done as you've described. Perhaps the current was too high, or there was a loose connection that you might have jolted.

A PHR would need at least 7V with a rkcstr driver, IIRC. The driver probably wasn't getting enough voltage for proper regulation, hence the sporadic burning.

When you hooked up the 9V, the driver kicked things in the ass, and started pumping out whatever amperage it was set to (probably way too high.) Hence, dead PHR.

Hard luck, man. Don't give up!

Well, I asked the seller to set it at 100mA (I was told that usually they will set it at what you ask) so I figured it was at 100mA, I have no way to test what it is set at if I were to try myself, hence why I asked for them to set it. However, I guess I shouldn't have assumed that they did set it, but I still had no way of knowing for sure...Well, atleast I know it's the diode not the driver. $10 vs $17...still kinda pisses me off though...both of my first lasers done by myself have died...First the other red diode I have is like an 18th of an 18th of an inch too small (my original died) and it won't fit into an aixiz, now my blu-ray is dead...I only have you my trusty greenie, DONT DIE ON ME!!

9v batteries are actually NOT a good source of power. They may have enough volts, but they often do not carry enough amps.

Also, don't give up on the diode... I had the EXACT same problem and it turned out that it worked several weeks later. Try fresh batteries (not a 9v) and see what happens.

I had a similar thing happen to my PHR. I had it hooked up to a rckstr driver using a somewhat depleted 9V (I think it was only putting out 8V) so I had the pot turned way up. Well I put it down and came back to it a few days later forgetting I had the pot cranked up. I hooked up a 12V source and it shined REAL bright for a second then went REAL dim. I'm pretty sure I LED'd it to diode heaven :banghead:

On a PHR your minimum would be 9v. But if you use a 9v battery it will quickly fall out of regulation. 12v would be the best to use. Go to DX and get some 3.2v Lithium ion batteries. They come in the same size as AAs, and AAA batteries.

The pot is to set the mAs to the diode and has nothing to do with the battery.

So TJ, is it possibly my PHR is still good? I think I might of killed it, maybe not because of the voltage in but I had the pot cranked all the way up on my rckstr driver and a PHR just cant handle that. Doesn't that sound right?

Exactly. If you get a dim blue/violet color in the diode window its LED'd. Toss it and start again. This time you need to buy a dummy load, Rkcstr web page sells them, to reset the driver. Either that or have one of our guys do it for you. The rest you're going to have read. Start with the Blu-Ray section of the forum. Its all there, and not hard to find.

I pretty much know I LEDd it. I have a dummy load I made myself, the driver has been re-set, and I've spent over 60 hours reading all the info on this forum, just wanted some confirmation, thanks anyway TJ. Sorry about the threadjack BP, good luck:yh:
