You seem to be under the illusion that the diode in question will cost a similar amount to a LOC diode.

My guess is that the diode you linked would cost more than 500$ if you can even buy one.

I contacted a distributor of this diode (photonic products) and they told me 141.67 USD for quantities of 1-24. I was very surprised!

But then I realised that these diodes are multimodes. I think a badly focused red with a thick beam would be horrible. So I thought we could go with the 150mw sinlge mode 640nm diode. http://www.photonic-products.com/products/laserdiodes_visible/opnext/hl6385dg.pdf Not sure of the price of these though. Cheaper of course.
