Any particular wavelength or color? There are many cheap direct diodes available. The reds are likely the least expensive.

More information will be needed. What exactly is the maximum spot size you want to achieve over what distance?
Beam expanded DPSS lasers will be best for long range beam quality, however single mode diodes can be very good nowadays if temperature stability is of any concern.
Is there a visibility threshold, as wavelength will make a huge difference?

You could use a G8 lens which has a longer focal length than the G2s. That would work better to keep divergence from getting out of hand with direct single mode laser diodes.
