Hello, LPF!!
I disassembled a 3EG lens today to clean with a disposable lens cloth wipe, which work great. Usually I use canned air but this time they needed wiped.
Out of curiosity I butted the spacer between the two lenses in my hand, and it appeared the spacer provides no spacing or support. The rear convex/concave lens rests against the back of the forward convex/convex lens. The lenses were in original orientation; definitely made sure of this.
So, I then carefully reassembled the lens without the spacer and fired it up. The laser (PLTB450B) collimated just the same...........Only, now there is far less wing splash.
If you care to, try this for yourself and see if your results differ. Thought I’d share
