2D square barcodes on LD cans

I've noticed that on all the BR LD's I've worked with (20mW Nichia, 100mW Nichia, PHR-803T, BDR-205), that they all have a very small square 2D barcode printed on the pin side of the package (between the pins).

Has anyone tried magnifying this and scanning the image with a 2d barcode reader? Maybe this would help identify the diodes, even if it is only a batch number...

Cool. Is anyone sure which code they might use? The square in the corner brings QR Code to mind.

I added some whitespace & Decode Barcode: Online still failed. ZXing Decoder Online Doesn't load for me.
drhu.org QRDecoder failed (never claimed to handle Micro QR).

qrcode.sourceforge.jp Java decoder GPLv2. Lists supporting Micro QR on their ToDo list. Development seems stalled tho. Latest version is from 2007-12-04. Source code repository is moved to GitHub 2008-11-08.

There must be a decoder someplace. Haven't searched very much.

OK, I've found a barcode reader that reads micro QR, and gives me a "successful read" beep from the PHR803T micro QR code (as above). Now I just have to hook up a serial cable to it to see what data it is reading.. Hopefully this will shed some light on the actual part number of these diodes.

Awesome. Where did the reader come from? Your reading a picture of the micro QR right?

Yup, actual successful read of the micro QR 2d barcode from the phr803t diode. I had the reader kicking around in the parts bin, and just needed to find the maual with the config barcodes to tell it to read micro QR (its turned off by default for some stupisd reason)..

I'm soldering up the rs232 cable now, so I'll be able to post the returned ascii string soon...

OK, prepare for a letdown.

Read the barcode.. It is a single numerical (decimal) string. It says 1101039184

Probably a batch number.

Still, it may help with batch tracking.

I'll have a go at reading some of the other ld packages I have, and see if they say anything different.

Some more info (from the barcode reader's diagnostic read mode):

These laser diode barcodes are:

Micro QR code: Version M4 (17 x 17 Modules)
Mask Pattern Reference #0, Error Correction level "Q"
Data Field: 10 Data & 14 checks in GF(256), 0 erasures and 1 errors


I imagine that the error is a correctable one, since the reader indicated a good read.

OK, just took a couple of microphotos of the barcodes from an older (and dead) 25mw supposedly Nichia LD out of a Coherent Radius host, and a supposedly new, supposedly 100mw, supposedly original Nichia LD (it has long leads with no signs of having ever been soldered or used).

Maybe someone (laserov?) could do the conversion to monochrome, like last time? I can't directly read these images with the barcode reader.

First one attached here is the older dead 25mw...

Hmmm... BDR-205 LD has a VERY different 2d barcode... Not Micro QR, and MUCH smaller.

It'd be worth checking if the 6x and 8x writer diodes have this oddball barcode format as well...

Hopefully laserov will come by again else we might just have to bug him by pm. :san: No idea what he used to make the conversion.

:scowl: Damn they have to make it difficult don't they.
Is it too small to get a picture? Perhaps with a good bit of luck someone could identify the code.
