these are two red LDs from LG burners. The one on the top comes from a 20x burner and the bottom one comes from its 22x successor. The dies look identical, both are 2.20mm long.

they are identical.. the change in speed is due to other factors, not different diodes.

They are EXACTLY the same..

FYI: i have mine running stable at 400mA (heatsinked) and its nice.

side note: Nice pics.

P.S. lasers are cool

I like the part where you can buy an LG 22x DVD-RW for around $25.
I've bought a couple of them but my PC still has a 16X ;)

I run mine at 430mA in a dilda barrel...................

430 you say.... hrm .. i think my hunk o aluminum heat sink could handle the heat.. but could the laser handle the power...

yeah the open cans can handle 430 thats what mine is set at. i havent had a problem yet.

420 is a great spot but some people have even ran them up to 500.

420 is like a happy median for the mxdl builds and other flashlights hosts with decent heat sinking.

i wouldnt run my open can that high unless it was in a nice heat sink.
