20mw Greenie Starts a match by removing just one thing.

So i recently decided to open up one of my older 20mw greenies from DX, I'm getting a better 50mw
focusable so i didn't need this one.(plus I've got a few others like it) so i did a little experimenting and
made it so that it is able to start a match w/o an external focuser.

I got a driver with diode housing and optics, it comes apart into four pieces. I took out the pieces with
an X, i didn't need the lens cap thingy cause it wouldn't let the contact reach the batteries if i didn't get
rid of it and then i put it back together.

After I did this the divergence went to shit but you cant really see it well from the pic but its really bad
it's also really focused at the aperture, good for burning.

Here is a video of it starting a match, bear in mind that before i did anything to it this laser couldn't pop
a black balloon or anything at all.

it looks like you took out some expander lens.... and also pot modded it, judging by the holes over the pot. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Ya maybe I did because I didn't know what it was. About the pot, well that didn't do squat no matter how I turned it it didn't change a thing, I don't know why though.

there could be a component limiting the max current to the diode, I'm not well versed on green modules. But it looks like you just refocused it. Plus, it's probably overspec and putting out quite a bit of green/IR. That happens sometimes.

I knew about the refocusing I was just merely pointing out that I could do so without anything else just the laser itself.
And it was my first foray into the workings of a green laser usually i just point them, but i might make one someday.

cool, well good work experimenting.

It looks like you stripped the laser to it's bare minimum. A lot of the space in the module is taken up by a beam expander, which you removed. But please be carefull and check where you IR filter went, it sure isn't here now, so you're getting quite a bit IR out of it. Probably why it now burns much better.

It's a cheap chinese one it didnt come with an IR iflter but dont worry I rarely use it in fact when I did ths was the first time in proably 2 months I didnt need it anymore so I decided to take it apart.

It is ugly isn't it? but like I said its a peice of crap I dont use anymore so I thought I'd have some fun with it.

I would but I only got one microwave and I don't want it blowing up. cause then I got to buy a new one and that's less money for lasers :P

So is it somewhat safe to say that most green modules either come with a beam expander or the crystals are right up against the diode, one or the other but not both? And what's the point of expanding a beam; just to get more perfect collimation that doesn't diverge?
