16x BDR-209 build problem

Good to hear it worked out!

Getting a laser diode out of such modules is often very difficult without destroying it - if you try to pull from the pins you'll yank those clean off, if you try to push from the front you risk ramming the output window into the die.

The sleds these diodes come in are made of a fairly brittle alloy which can be broken from the side with some pliers to get the diode out, so that's not nearly as diffcult to do.

As for the need for thermal compound: press fitting the diode into the module will deform both a bit and usually result in good contact. Some thermal paste can be used to fill any gaps, but think fractions of a microlitre there. If you're not comfortable with it, leave it out, your diode will not run -that much hotter- for it.
