VERY carefully, and sometimes the internal parts do get damaged and then the diode gets tossed. The benefits in this case we a much cleaner output. The diode window was causing problems.

I'll just say I've seen differing opinions on that.
I think the price more then makes up for any eventual issues though.

Yeah, I would be curious what increases in power you get by losing the can/glass.
