i recently extracted a strange looking 10 prong diode from a cd player, can anyone enlighten me as to how i can hook this up or what it is?

Ok I had one of these.

the pins look like this

oooo
o o
oooo

the only ones that mattered on mine there these

----
o o

check it with an Multi meter, you should be able to measure resistance across it

if so test with LESS than 75ma

I've seen one of those. It's an IR diode and IR pickup in one can. Totally useless too... as it's probably ~1mW of 780nm

yeah i have one of those sitting on my desk. too lazy to take the PCB board off of it since there are two layers that the prongs go through. i pulled mine from an old cd burner

the one I got was a red and it was powerful. I say was because I killed it just before I got my host light. it was NOT pure IR, it was a red, yours "should" be also.

was my post, it was my first diode I salvaged.

it will work but in order to use an axixz module you will have to use a dremel to grind down the casing to make it fit. I don't have pics of mine anymore. if you don't grind down the casing the lens won't get close enough to focus the beam.

don't give up =)

ugh ive been looking for it for the past few days, but then my mom told me she threw it away while cleaning! dammit....
