That's wild. Do you end up selling the stuff you make or is it just for your personal collection?

Haven’t sold anything yet .But I am open to the idea.
I would think the raver/hippie/trance/dance/burning man crowd would love stuff like this. Do you have a collection of pics of your work somewhere?

If you search my content on this site there are a bunch of different builds I have done

I'm not into business or marketing but you might try setting up a shop somewhere like Etsy and posting pics of your work to reddit. If you aren't familiar with social media, on reddit there are lots of boards (called subreddits) created by users (like the burning man crowd, and geeks who like high tech gadgets). You might consider finding some of those types of subreddits who are friendly to user-created tech like this and see if you get any bites. Just a thought!

Accidents looking for a place to happen who don't know any better nor anything about eye safety is not a place to market hand held lasers. Maybe with LEDs instead of laser diodes the might fly as a curiosity among those crowds.

Is surprising your "selling" suggestions re: dangerous lasers, ignore completely any consideration of US laser laws and eye safety of any kind + legal and liability implications of doing what you suggest? Yes they are interesting in a Pez Dispenser inspired way and would be attractive some with enough $s to buy one but...

Laser Hazard--Eye Safety and potential for eye damage the primary #1 concern.-- not selling kids very dangerous to play toys to shine at others endangering thier own and the eyesight of others.
The Chinese get away with it because they hide in and behind China and smuggle illegal to import laser pointers into the USA with false Customs declarations. Unless 405 nanoMatt wants to make models that output 5mW or less marketing them as a business is not a good idea.

PS Nothing >5mW can be listed on eBay regardless of output power. Leser poniters on eBay all say 5mW or less, if not Ebay removes them as quickly as possible.
In USA US FDA laws, rules, and regulations prohibit any hand held lasers over 5mW for just that reason.
"21 CFR 1040.11(b) and 1040.11(c), limit surveying, leveling, and alignment, and demonstration laser products to Class IIIa. This means that pointers are limited to 5 milliwatts output power in the visible wavelength range from 400 to 710 nanometers. There are also limits for any invisible wavelengths and for short pulses. Pointers may not exceed the accessible emission limits of CDRH Class IIIa or IEC Class 3R." https://www.fda.gov/radiation-emitt...rtant-information-laser-pointer-manufacturers

FYI: have a look at this Laser Hazard Chart: https://www.lasersafetyfacts.com/resources/FAA---visible-laser-hazard-calcs-for-LSF-v02.png and here even class 2 and 3/1mW and 5mW can cause eye damage https://www.lasersafetyfacts.com/

Thank you! I appreciate you posting this, it's a valuable counter-point to the pitfalls of unchecked consumerism, and a reminder of safety is always nice.

I'm assuming the lasers would be toned down to under 5mw for the general public, of course. Whether Etsy would allow it is another question. As mentioned previously, it is only a thought.

I have not and would not sell any of the >5 mw lasers that I have made .when I said I was open to the idea it was with consideration of the law .I know that my creations without high power are not as impressive and probably would not be big sellers. I make these for my own personal enjoyment not with some ultimate goal of making $.I agree with everything you have said and thank you for the advice also.

ps.I would be lying if I said the pez dispenser comment didn’t sting a little!🤕

The burning man crowd and the tech geeks already have lasers, this stuff isn't the rarity it used to be, but even if you replaced the lasers with simple LEDs I bet you could design stuff that would sell, you have an eye for it, in my opinion.

Best of luck, bro!

Thank you for the compliment.

FYI
a lady ranger at BM was blinded in one eye by some guy while they were trying to find him.
SO she was looking directly at him from some distance- so she got several 'hits' and they are accumulative (same as one long exposure)...since then lasers (without permit) are banned at BM.
and
a federal offence to (by intention) lase any Aircraft.

to get updated on safety visit laserpointersafety.com and READ-- new items there every day... very important stuff. very serious-- safety is no joke!
