The top and bottom parts look like connectors for pipes. A wild guess would be that it's involved in regulating rate of gas flow... maybe something used in anaesthetics?

Back before the Chez made me the banner I used to just use the default green, red, purple and dark blue that were offered by the forum. I'd say that's sufficient for most collections, it's only when you're having to distinguish between several different shades of one colour that it becomes an issue.

^ Does the colour coding really need to be that precise? Sure, for rhd's signature (since he has, like, every wavelength you can imagine and multiple shades of each colour to distinguish between) but not for the rest of us? :p
