    What happened?

Man, I'm out of the laser game for a year or so, and suddenly I'm reading about direct, non-DPSS green laser diodes? When did this happen, and do they suck? Also, there's this: [URL="http://gizmodo.com/5916842/the-only-thing-cooler-than-a-laser-is-an-x+ray-laser"/URL]

    808nm 12W Diode

For my most ambitious (stupid?) project to date, I just bought a 12W IR diode from ebay: http://www.coherent.com/downloads/FAP800series_DSFinal.pdf It looks like it's a fiber-coupled array of 808nm diodes. I want to make something very burny, maybe stick a 4x beam expander in front of it...

    My god, it's blooooooooo

These newfangled 445nm diodes have forced me and my wallet to come out of seclusion and slap together a new laser. Wow, this thing is bright. It puts my sad little ~200mW LPC to shame. I actually accidentally *burned* my hand with this thing. Seriously - it's blistered and everything. Here are...

    ">5 mW" Burner

Just wanted to get peoples' opinions on this, since I have little experience with greens (and lasers I didn't build myself). I bought a supposedly 5 mW green laser off eBay for about $12. Recently, just for the hell of it, I broke off its metal cap and realized I could adjust the lens nut with a...

    New Build

Those LPC diodes are teh shite. This is a lab bench style, all brushed-aluminum build with external and internal heatsinks, putting out ~250 mW at 500 mA. Drilling through aluminum with a dremel tool sucks, btw.

    Laser building is nice.

Maybe it's my elevated blood-alcohol level, or that it's 3:40 AM, but I must say -- as I solder away at yet another DDL circuit -- there's something meditative about building a laser. A couple hours of thought and concentration results in a beam of red light that can light a match at twenty...

    Solder Heatsink

My upcoming build is going to be a high power LPC, in what I'm hoping to be a from-scratch, heatsinked metal host. I'm trying to do everything myself, and I don't have access to a drill press. I'm wondering about the feasibility of molding a heatsink around an AIXIZ module using solder or...

    Night Vision Phone

So, my experimentation with my iPhone as Safety goggles ( http://laserpointerforums.com/f44/indirect-viewing-laser-safety-48622.html#post663468 ) led me along these lines: The phone's sensitivity to IR is not particularly high, but I wonder if one could build an effective IR illuminator using an...

    Focusing PHRs

I just made a useful discovery for people like myself who are just starting out with this stuff (though it's entirely possible it has been noticed before on this forum -- if I'm being redundant, I apologize). I've been having trouble properly setting my PHR diodes in the AIXIZ housing. It's...

    New PHR build

I finally built one of my PHR modules (and my ever-decreasingly sized DDL drivers -- it's down to a footprint hardly bigger than the LM317) into a decent(ish) host. Also, I set the diode correctly! I should have taken people seriously when they said to make sure that a 405nm is more than...

    Indirect Viewing for laser safety

Lately, I've been experimenting with a red LOC diode whose output I estimate at about 150 mW. I have no 650 nm glasses, and the power of the thing was pretty intimidating. So I came up with a solution that will benefit anyone with an iPhone and no access to safety glasses. Basically, I built a...

    The Red Menace

Just finished testing my new LOC LPC-815 on my test driver. It is a thing of beauty! There's something pretty damn nice about lighting a piece of flash paper from literally across the room with a beam of light!! So. Very. Red! Should I be able to get that sort of range on a PHR at 125mA? I know...

    BluRay Lasergun

This is my second build. Stuck a DDL driver circuit and a PHR LD in the casing of a cheap, pump-action paintball gun..Very satisfying to fire! http://laserpointerforums.com/members/dvorhagen/albums/my-lasers/1983-finished-gun/...

    Power Estimation

Heya, folks-- I'm trying to figure out an as-reliable-as-possible method for estimating the milli-wattage of a laser without a meter. I eventually intend to build one (though from what I've been reading, homebuilt power meters tend to be quite inaccurate), but in the meantime, I wonder if there...

    405nm Eye Protection

I was hoping someone could recommend some decent blu-ray protective glasses in the < $50 range. My first laser's a PHR-803T, outputting something like 100mW, which is great. Unfortunately, I spent all my money on the project and now I'm paranoid as hell about my vision, and don't really want to...

    Heya, all, from MA!

Glad to be here. I just completed my first build (a PHR BluRay with a home-built driver, operating between 40 and 125mA), and I'm already obsessed with this stuff. There's just something about flipping on the power for the first time, and seeing that supernatural violet glow (especially when you...
