1.25V is all the overhead it needs and its only that high because it is needed for Vref in the feedback loop comparator. The reason the LM317 requires 3V overhead is because it is powering a Darlington array of transistors, where as a LDO is only using a single PNP transistor.

Nope ... 1.25 is all. LDOs like the LM1117 work a little bit differently because of the internal transistor setup, they do not require the overhead of normal regulators. That's what makes them low drop out. Just use 10 microfarads (10uF). That is all that is needed for a stable driver. Use 2...

Use a LM1117 instead of the LD317, it only requires about 1.2V over the diode voltage instead of 3V. But you will need to replace the electrolytic capacitor with a *ceramic* 10uF 10V or 16V for stability(example: TDK part# FK24Y5V1A106Z).

I have a D90 also. Since the D90 is more towards the "pro" end of the spectrum, the default camera settings (saturation, contrast, sharpening) are on the conservative end of the scale given that the end user will tweak it to their liking. Also the D5100 is using the new generation of CMOS...

Ok guys I have some tests results of my of JibBoost ... the IC I used is not capable of boosting as much as claimed by the manufacturer. Set for 1.8A it fails to deliver more than 1A at 3V and only 1.7A at 4.2V ... with a 4V load. It behaves much like the NJG as such I will not be perusing this...

What Helios said is correct, you dont want the 1.3A version for getting 444mA. If you want a single cell solution get the 379mA, that way you do get regulation for most of the cell's cycle and its a "safer" current. Helios, no problem Ill test it for you. Im in the middle of testing 9 boost...

As Helios stated earlier, voltage is meaningless in a constant current driver. You are getting 7.85V because that is what the diode is demanding ... you really need to test it with a test load to see what really is going on. Its cheap to make yourself a high power test load for 445, in fact...
