Care and feeding of your Arctic beast

Check out this thread - diy-spyder-s3-arctic-burning-focus-lens-53771 I found an old jeweler's loupe that fits into the front of the screw-on Arctic lens assembly. I don't have to unscrew anything and it sets the focal distance to about 4 inches. And DON'T FORGET YOUR GOGGLES!

Spyder III Pro Arctic - Questions Answered

I've seen non-reflective loss in optics by re-radiance (you can see it a lot more often with a 405nm beam because it doesn't saturate your vision like a blue or green). In a thicker lens, it shows as a faint line passing through, often a different color. Then there's edge loss by scattering...

    LASORB usage (with 445nm)

Winter in the colder climates, ESD is horrible. It's not uncommon to have audible (and painful) arcs to door handles and other metal objects. Microfiber clothes and furniture turn into Van de Graaff generators. They make anti-stat spray, but it only lasts for a short while. Get's old pretty...

Spyder III Pro Arctic - Questions Answered

"It doesn't. If someone with a LPM measures the power with and without the lens, isn't the difference of the two measurements the reflected power projected back from the lens?" Did you read the word "absorbed" in my post?

Spyder III Pro Arctic - Questions Answered

Yes, but that doesn't differentiate between absorbed and reflected.

Weller still the soldering iron of choice?

If you ever come into some money (yeah right) you should try one of these Ferrari soldering stations. I use them for fine-pitch work, even the low-end is pricey but you can't beat the 3-second heat-up time. JBC Tools

    Lasers in 1966!

Yeah. That reminds me of a quote that I copied out of another person's Sig - "Originally Posted by james1095 Back when a 1W laser meant a 6 foot long water cooled plasma tube and 3 phase power, it was impossible to forget the respect it required. When it's a handheld device that runs on...

Spyder III Pro Arctic - Questions Answered

One more thing. There have also been comments from people about the non-training lens (window) reflecting too much power back at the diode. I unscrewed my Arctic's front lens, held it away from the unit and tilted it slightly. This allowed me to observe the reflected power projected back from...

Spyder III Pro Arctic - Questions Answered

I didn't want to post at all on this question, but the Arctic hatefest has mentioned spikes coming out of the power supply. Has anyone run across any scope pics of the output from the Arctic G1 or G2 power supplies? If it were easier to get to, I'd do it myself.

Had to ask - is there even one woman on LPF?

"LPFs culture does not encourage meets and greets, which is sad." Any idea why that is?

Had to ask - is there even one woman on LPF?

"There are several" - Just curious. What percentage would that be? I was asking about LPF. You mean J.E.? That's great. All I asked is if any of them are here. On LPF. Not the gender mix of graduate students. Touch a nerve there? :: URLS deleted :: Actually no. I know a bunch of...

    The Jacobs Ladder thread

High voltage - One hand behind your back and insulated shoes (and chair) keeps it from finding a route through your heart. Been bit. Didn't like it.

Slightly crazy 980 nm laser experiment

I got an "eyeburn" from a 405nm diode, bare and unfocused, in less than a second. The afterburn did go away in about a week but I was really lucky. I could very easily have had that little bar pattern permanently etched into mt eye. Remember that a very bright point source can damage your...

    Ebay $9 blu-ray pens: GREAT!

"It is amazing to point it at glow-in-the-dark items and see how they react. Very fun!" Try to find flourescent "day glow" items. That's when you really see how much these pointers put out! I have some dayglow orange things that light up so much that you can't really see the violet from the...

Slightly crazy 980 nm laser experiment

"the illuminator didn't noticeably dim when I looked at it through a 750 nm filter, so I think most of the light I see is at least in the high 700s." Yeah, exactly - and the low 700's are deep red. I tried to find a source for IR flourescence cards (charge them up with white light and they...
