You would also need to take into account light reflected from the glass envelope. Not such a problem, if it is found to reflect all wavelengths equally, though.
The driver looks salvageable. Don't give up!
As for the diode, I wouldn't hold my breath. But you might as well try it out. Good for practice, if nothing else.
Also, to produce this effect, it is crucial that the air be absolutely still. Sharpies work well, but the big black chisel tip markers seem to produce the most reliable results for me.
Couldn't agree more. I went crazy for about 45 minutes trying to bridge the resistors on my FlexDrive. Damn solder wouldn't stick, flow, glob on, nothing. I finally tinned a tiny piece of wire and was able to bridge the gap with that. Position, tap with iron, done.
You might be a laser nut if. . .
You have an "Ask me about my lasers" sticker on your car.
You have more money in lasers than you do in your car.
You have ever been pleasantly surprised to hear your own flesh sizzle.
You own 25 DVD drives and 2 DVDs.
You have ever held a memorial service...
I have a cheap green. I'll have to research a nice one.
As for duty cycle, I'd say a minute on (roughly, and usually much less,) off until room temp again. I mostly go on instinct. I've only just barely got it warm so far. I'm probably being paranoid, but hey, I want it to last.
Most of what I...
So, my GGW diode came in yesterday (thanks, Hightechdealz!) and I was thusly able to put together my pocket mini kit that's been sitting around. The kit went together smoothly, taking just under two hours to put together (actually, a lot of that time went towards trying to bridge the resistors...
I decided to post this one to show what you can kludge together with little money, no appropriate tools, and no patience :)
My Big Fat Ugly Red started out with some .875" copper round stock I bought off the 'Bay. I used a 3/4" repair coupling and some machine bushings to bore a...
I had my first set at 150ma. It lived for about two months; I finally killed it by trying to pop a balloon from across the room. I got it popped, but the set-up took longer than I expected and I went beyond my 1 minute duty cycle. The next time I hit the button, it LED'd :(
I got mine yesterday, it was dispatched August 29th. Ordered 50mw p2, got the p1 instead. Dammit.
Output seems good. At least on par with my LedShoppe laser. Sufficient to sting my upper lip after a few seconds.
Beam quality is crap. Lots and lots of splash and fuzz around the dot. I suspect...
It's pretty, though. I'm just not sure if it's $3,500 worth of pretty (actually, I am, and no, it's not.)
I wonder what sort of diode they have in there?
Anyway, for that price, you could have a very nice 8X Blu-Ray, ten times over
I bought a 50mw LedShoppe green, and I was very pleased. The beam was bright and visible, and the spot was clean. It developed some side splash after I tried it with a 3.6v cell, though. I think I might have scorched the crystal a bit a or something; anyway, that's clearly not the laser's fault...
