first of all i suggest you to try and mesure if any current is flowing from the tailcap to the body,if its 0 then your laser could not be dead,it could be broke just one connection with the drop.don't buy new diode before you are sure the old is dead.

well yeah the open can is the only minus here,i have pushed my tec cooled p73 up to 1,6w and it survived and still workes great,i don't think that an oclaro could achive something similar,if you get an oclaro don't push it more than 1w,those don't really like to be overdriven as p73's

since you noted that output was wrong my guess is that something got in front of the diode's window and messed the output,while this would lead to a catastrophic failure of the diode if the diode was a high powered as the junk would fried and cracked the diode's window,in your case looks like...

i had one driver that was shorted on first try-arrival, after some testing steps i found out that one capacitor on the board was internally shorted,ic chip didn't survive though :(
