As far as I know, it shouldn't. Magnetic fields are additive, so if there is an additional, ambient magnetic field, it's just like adding a constant to a function and taking the derivative of it. It won't make a difference. Inductors only care about changing magnetic fields and/or changing...

I couldn't agree more with what BB said. And actually, I would like to see the DIY driver thread stickied. No one seems to build/use LM317 or variant drivers anymore. I remember back when RHD was all about those and those were all the rage, everyone was making their own drivers! Now, people...
