From nothing to Laser - What's needed?

could you describe the tools and process of making a hobby board? I assume you didn't buy a 30x30 plank with rubber feet built in at the Home Depot. Like did you use a router, a circular saw, wood glue, etc?

From nothing to Laser - What's needed?

While I'm sure I messed up my diode and my power supply is probably insufficient, the proximity and orientation of the lens was definitely the primary candidate to going from being a fancy lightbulb to a crappy laser. Not only was the lens in backwards, but it was physically impossible to get...

From nothing to Laser - What's needed?

so today I made my second attempt at creating a ~125mW laser. Unlike last time, I didn't accidentally clip the wrong connecting wire on my diode (yay dyslexia). I got all my soldering pretty much correct, hooked up an LM317 to a pot set to about 4.9 ohms, and then tried pressing the diode. No...

    Changing Eye color with laser

I saw some commercial recently with rainbow eyes and it got me thinking about this thread. It seems to me that some people would want to have rainbow eyes and by partially ablating the "brown" or whatever to get closer to the "blue", you might be able to get multiple shades, and thus create...

    Changing Eye color with laser

I'll wait for the Violet eyes, like my uncle (who I was named after). Still shining a laser into your eyes seems like something you would want to wait 4-5+ years for the technique to be refined.

MIT Offshoot's New Direct-Diode Laser Can Cut, Weld, Blow Stuff Up

MIT Lincoln Lab spinout unveils new more powerful direct-diode laser this is a few months old, but I figured you might like to see more information and a spiffy video on it. I'm always on the look out for more powerful diodes so i tripped over this recently.

    Thorium Laser Cars?

when I was in a Steampunk Club in college, we spent a lot of time discussing ways to turn optics into power. One of our officers was a physics-optics major. One of the best ideas we came up with was a series of mirrors on some kind of hand cranked gear system next to something similar to a sun...

    Thorium Laser Cars?

well I guess I'm glad I didn't think too hard on it. What caught my eye was: so, I'm imagining some kind of IR spectrum laser either powered by or activated by thorium - kind of like how gallium nitride or whatever is used for making 405nm diodes, I figured thorium might be some part of the...

    Thorium Laser Cars?

Thorium lasers: The thoroughly plausible idea for nuclear cars | Txchnologist I didn't fully understand, or read the whole article, but it got me thinking about what lasers could do, and whether we could make a thorium laser (since I have no clue). It also had a nice picture of something that...

    BMW to develop Laser Headlights

wait, so we are talking about a laser powered headlight? Isn't that like counterintuitive or something? Because if it isn't, I want to build a laser powered flashlight.

    Dragon Lasers 1W Spartan

I've been fond of the spartan overall, it tends to produce results WL claims but doesn't yield. It's interesting to see the switch from 18650 to a pair of 123As. The blue color comparison is interesting too. I get the feeling indigo is probably right around 435-440 because 445 seems kinda...

    BMW to develop Laser Headlights

after seeing how much the 2-12W lasers cost, and how many diodes you can get out of some projectors, maybe it's a deal? Especially if used. I don't even know enough about these new headlights to know if I should be serious. :undecided:

    what makes a milspec Laser?

thank you! That answered a lot of my concerns, and I totally get the bug analogy. > www.ngbpdc.ngb.army.mil/pubs/385/ngr385-63.pdf mentions class 2, 3, 3b, 4, and something called "military exempt lasers" > Military exempt Laser regulations appears to include experimental lasers. >...

    My first 445nm 1W+ Laser

for your price range some will throw in a pair of safety glasses as part of the package. Look for one of these packages, and buy a tripod elsewhere, or request a tripod on the side - they are only 10-40 bucks. For example, Laser housing /accessories : Zen Cart!, The Art of E-commerce Laser Tripod

    Laser Rainmakers

this makes me think someone should compile a FAQ on Frequencies and their uses. For example, some lasers are used for treating skin conditions, others for hair removal, others for blasting cancer, and others for cutting. Green is bright and good for scopes, and so on.

    What is science?

    1. Science is the study of the physical universe. 2. Technology is the physical application of Science. Thus science could potentially be as useless as armchair philosophy when divorced from technology. I think it's important to distinguish the two, since most media outlets don't.

    what makes a milspec Laser?

I've got one laser designed for mounting on a rifle or "BFG" pistol, and when I think about setting up a different colored laser - like violet or whatever, the first concern that occurs to me is the shock destroying it. I'm worried the soldering mounts will snap, the driver will crack, the lens...

Looking for a host? Click me!

I liked the uniquefire and the that high metallic-finish one right after it. I've been obsessed with the 'tactical pointy' ones ever since I saw a triple prong deal. I just ordered a host for a 405 but there's some great ones here.

From nothing to Laser - What's needed?

so my laser protective goggles finally came in from OEM. They are shiny red and definitely require contact lenses instead of glasses. They turn everything red but protect from about 80nm to well over 532nm, meaning they work for violet, blue, and green lasers. I've deconstructed a broken...

    Acer computers = bad?

i used to be an HP fan about 6 years ago, and when I saw all the kids spending their college loan money on Acers, I had to wonder. Acer was the model that contracted tons of single moms and work/college kids who needed a laptop for school, but I noticed they tended to have problems. 6 years...
