    Is this driver any good?

yes I have one of those. They are boost drivers, but I couldn't boost them with a li-ion battery to 6V and I gave it up. they kinda suck ... I think they are only meant for single Alkaline battery (or Ni-MH) I would suggest you buy another one.

    Interesting Battery

Not sure if those are rated for high discharge currents. Probably there is a protection that won't allow high currents.

The BlitzBuck V3 Round Adjustable - Burning component ! (What's the driver made of?)

If you have put the batteries in reverse, maybe that damaged it.. Shoot wolfman a PM with a picture of what needs to be replaced. I am sure it won't be a problem to tell you what has burnt. I think we all know what the main IC is so it's not a big secret to the society :D

Store Your Batteries in the Freezer

They actually say this below the graph.. "Avoid freezing. Batteries freeze more easily if in discharged state." so basically just put them in the refrigerator :D

    Protected 18650 advice.

I am not exactly sure what you ask maybe a photo would help. You can use Kapton tape or black electrical tape to isolate the exposed parts.
