    Help with broken HHD

Many data recovery places have different tiers of recovery service. The lower tiers, the ones that often only cost a few hundred dollars, are usually just them attaching it to another machine and using something like unstoppable copy (meow!) to try to copy data from harder to read sectors...

New DIY LED lighting for my room

djQUAN, I'm glad you at least have power for critical applications such as lighting and checking LPF  Oh, and I guess you're also checking on storm progress. I'm glad you checked in, though. When I first heard about this, I started wondering how solar panel LED house guy (that's your...

WHAT are the ODDS???? eerie true happenings thread

I hope your brother and his new-found doppelganger don't try to see if they have similar SSNs or bank account numbers :p

Those used to be illegal around here, because some kid ate one and died or something. If I had a nickel.... Actually, I think nickels are poisonous to babies too...

    Cheap automotive HID ballast teardown

Like many other things, if you start out with a quality bulb, you may be able to get away with overdriving it higher than with a no-name china bulb. GE, Philips, Osram, and Koito are some well trusted manufacturers of automotive 35W HID capsules, last I checked, which was quite some time ago...

    What lights do you have?

If you like the solitaire, Maglite took great pains to make the new solitaire LED very much like the old one. Except that it puts out a heck of a lot of light, relatively speaking. It was gifted to me by a very nice forum member here, and while there was some debate as to its future as a...

    Cheap automotive HID ballast teardown

A motorcycle HID kit is the same as half of a car HID kit. You need one ballast per bulb. If you have two bulbs, you have two ballasts. This allows for shorter runs of high voltage (~90V), meaning less chance of electrocution in the event of a crash. The igniter unit must be located <1ft...

    50w Osram 450nm diode module!

They can try all they want, we'll still find a way. Ain't much longer and we'll have a DIY way of bonding gold wires to bare chips. Heck, there's been a page up for about a decade now, showing step by step how to solder a bare laser diode resonator using soldering iron, hot plate, flux, and...

Gold foil to maximize diode-heatsink heat transfer?

I don't think anybody claimed that foil was the best solution, but without buying new parts, that's the best solution for this problem. Sure, you can fix any heatsinking issue by saying "Buy a better heatsink." He has the heatsink he has, and it's good for what it does. Small airgap or large...

Gold foil to maximize diode-heatsink heat transfer?

@TheDukeANumber1: My P60 anecdote was with regards to aluminum foil to fill in the gap, vs just leaving the gap as it is with air. With regards to the paste, I think the paste would be better than filling the gap with air, though still suboptimal compared to having the parts pressed together...

    Encouragement?

iwire had a good gem: Don't take it personal. If she doesn't mean to give you a hard time and you don't take it personal, it won't affect you, and it won't affect her. If she DOES mean to bust your bawz, and you don't take it personal, it reinforces the observation that she's being mean to you...

FastTech has 18650's in stock!!!! Sanyo/Panasonic!!

Would recommend buying batteries in a separate order from other goods from fasttech. Or just buying batteries stateside from a trusted vendor. I ordered mine one day before the posmalay ban. My tracking seems to tell me something different every day. At one point it was held for dangerous...

Gold foil to maximize diode-heatsink heat transfer?

He is trying to fix a problem that many folks encounter but don't realize. I get the feeling that a large number of builds are 12mm module + set screw design. He's looking for a simple way to increase the effectiveness of this poor design, rather than designing something new. It makes a...

Gold foil to maximize diode-heatsink heat transfer?

quan, nah, that makes more sense, and is likely the primary reason behind the coating. I think there are easier ways to address the thermal path issue. We already have direct-press heatsinks, and I've even seen some 12mm module heatsinks that are c-clamp style, I think. Much better than the...

    Cheap automotive HID ballast teardown

Hmm, neat! I've got some of the original ballasts that some of those you show were designed from. They still work flawlessly, so no reason to take 'em apart :-/ Also, can't justify taking them out to use as a flashlight powersource. I'm interested to see the guts to know what cheap HID kit...

    My Cat Is Seeing Something

Once he's eaten his first fly, he'll be chasing that flavorful treat for the rest of his life. Congratulations, you have an addicted cat. At least he'll take out all the house bugs, though! On a more serious note, cats act strange when they get sick or when something in their environment...

Gold foil to maximize diode-heatsink heat transfer?

You'll notice that the diode's heat spreader is almost always gold colored. Maybe even gold plated. I would infer, then, that there is some merit to coating things in gold
