    Tesla Coil Build Thread

Yes. Why does that not make sense, specifically? For example, the HV (high voltage) side of the secondary is the output of the coil. I probably can't answer your question either way, but I don't understand what the question even is.

    Laser Animation Proof of Concept

Vertex art seems to be the way to go. Just need a fast 2-axis servo, ideally that doesn't make a ton of noise. Sounds like a fun* project. (Fun until it gets frustrating)

    Cutoff wavelength of human eyesight

I've checked my 808 nm with a spectrometer and it's definitely not outputting anything detectable below 800 nm. I tested my wife's eyes with the spectrometer and she told me she couldn't see anything above 800 nm. So, it looks like there are a few documented mutations in the L cones of the eye...

    Cutoff wavelength of human eyesight

I always read that human sight ranges from 400 nm - 700 nm, but, IME, that's way off. For example: 365 nm super high intensity LED looks bright to me. (not sure what the q-factor is though) 808 nm laser is obviously not super bright, but at 200 mW, I can see the dot very clearly. 940 nm high...

    Laser Animation Proof of Concept

Is there a way to make this into pixel art? Like a laser projector, but more, umm, analog/coarse? Could be pretty interesting to see.

Measure Laser Beam profile with webcam/industrial cam & open source software

Shoot, I just noticed that the availability of RPi's is now backorders going back to May or June. I hope you already have one! If you get the PiCamera, you can also get the NoIR version. Without the IR filter, it might be able to work on a wider variety of diode lasers in the shorter...

Measure Laser Beam profile with webcam/industrial cam & open source software

If you are using RPi, why not use the PiCam and just remove the lens? All of the drivers are open source, so you could potentially save yourself a lot of backend work.

    Straight Laser Pointer

I'm not aware of anything like this on the consumer market. I doubt any direct diode laser would be easy to focus into a point at that sort of range. You'd have better luck with DPSS or even better OPSL. But then you'd have to go through the trouble of making it yourself and very carefully...

    675nm / 690nm SM diodes + 1.2W 659nm

Definitely want one, but not for hundreds of dollars/euros. If there are only a few specific applications, I don't expect the price to come down too much, though.

    630NM laser

Oopsie lol 633/635 nm. Hmm, those listings probably understate the power to avoid trouble from the administration of the sites. As for an 808 nm module, I had purchased the lights88 brand last summer from Amazon, and the power was about 15% above the advertised 200 mW (I metered it at 233...

    630NM laser

You can buy 808 nm laser modules on eBay or even Amazon with power in that range for ~$20, but you'll need to add a heat sink and a power supply. If you can find a similar 630 nm laser (which should be easy, but I've personally had a tougher time finding those myself in that power range for...

How many watts could i fit into a 2 foot long half inch wide "pen" housing?

I hope this doesn't sound condescending, but I'm not sure how many people reading this post will have a good grasp on what makes lasers dangerous, so I'm going to word this maybe a little bit like I'm talking to a kid... I mean no disrespect... 1W is not a lot of electrical power, but it's a...

    Bug killing power?

Maybe you could build a small roach motel structure or 3D print one, then limit how the roaches reach the bait such that their heads are positioned in a very specific alignment, and install a laser module with the necessary heat management and optics to position and focus the beam right into the...

How many watts could i fit into a 2 foot long half inch wide "pen" housing?

Although I'm hoping my tone isn't quite as rough as the post above, I agree 100% with the idea that stating, at least generally, your purpose, will help tremendously in giving useful advice rather than people just saying "why not try something else?" If the answer is simply lasers are cool and...

Help modding cheap keychain laser pointer into a 1W monster

My recommendation is to not do this. The reasons why this is a bad idea are too many to list here and keep anyone's attention.

    Bug killing power?

Heh. Well, this is possible, of course, but there are some serious ethical and safety concerns here that cannot possibly be overstated. Never ever try this at home, boys and girls... So, obviously spiders and cockroaches are terrestrial (non-flying) creatures. These bugs are also fairly...

    Space Discussion Thread

https://www.livescience.com/alien-hut-spotted-moon China's Yutu II rover team reports that they've found a "mystery hut" on the far side of the moon. It's probably rocks or space debris, but I'm kind of surprised no one posted it here.

How do I stop my roof leaking in heavy rain?

I think you are on the wrong forum. You probably need a roofing contractor. If you want to DIY, you'll need to figure out where, exactly, the leak is coming from, and then search for videos on how to repair that specific part of the roof and go from there. So, you'll have to go into your...

XY Galvos with galvo motors and arduino

I'm not clear what you are asking. If you want to control a stepper motor with an arduino, you'll need a "shield," i.e. a board that converts the digital signal from the arduino to an electrical output with high enough current to drive the stepper. These are widely available off the shelf for...
