well my soldering iron is ESD grounded, so I guess that's good. I was just worrying about myself shocking the diode. I have been trying to ground myself as well as I can before I mess with the diode though.

does anybody know the pinout of these diodes, or are they the same as Senkat's cause I can just find that by myself...

batteries can spike to many times their rated power though, so it is possible that they could have been killed. But when a diode dies, it turns into an LED, so if you have NO light coming out, then I'm not sure what the problem is!

green lasers can also be VERY difficult to make, so building a red is a good idea! also, depending on how powerful your diode is and how much current its drawing and how hot it gets, you might want to buy or make some sort of heatsink for it

this brings up a point I've been worrying about. I posted in another thread, but that other thread appears to be dead, so how can I protect the diode from being ESD killed?? how exactly could I ground myself so I won't shock the diode?

hmm this brings up a good point. I am about to harvest an open can diode out of a driver, what precautions do I need to take to prevent the diode getting killed by ESD????
