As Magmabeam said, That "red light" is the IR pump diode and could be 500mW-1W of invisible IR. Do not look into it. I realize you already did, but I have to reiterate what Magmabeam said just to make sure you understand what you just did -- you stared into an operating high-powered infrared laser.

Alignment (polarity) has to be exact. You can try, you might get some green - IF its *truly* an 808nm diode. Often they're "off" by 2-3nm, and won't get the DPSS action to occur. You can certainly try. It might work. Try and get an IR diode that claims, at least, that it's exactly 808nm. --...

That doesn't neccessarily mean it's not the battery. However, are you saying it's instantly dimmer each time you turn it on? Or it starts bright and dims quickly?

It looks like it is, but it could also be a focused UV LED, which at the right powers could be just as bad. I've considered ordering one just to see what's going on with it.

Honestly, it could be either. If for some reason the current has been reduced to the point of it barely lasing, you'd get an LED effect, too. However with as cheap as PHRs are now, I'd try that first. Replace that, (or you could likely have someone here on the forum do it for you if you don't...
