I'm back, after more than a decade away from hobby lasers. My wife passed on 12/24/2009 so I took a break from life for a while. Then the pentagon brought me back, so I worked in DC for a while. I designed a 2 KW antitank laser (LAW), and still have the prototype. My shop was broken into and all...

    CLens GB #2 Interest_sign-up

FYI, for packages and products from China, and other infected countries. Being inside of the loop now that the US military is overseeing the relocating, testing, and the quarantine of US patriots returning from the quarantine zones in China. Here is a very recent information release about the...

I have a problem, my laser diode only emits IR light.

I've re-aligned the crystals to the IR LD before, and it is a task. Not impossible though.

I haven't built a hobby laser since my shop was broken into and cleaned out while I was in California, working with Paramount on laser shots for a Star Trek movie. That's why I stopped coming to this forum so long ago. You can put me down for 3 sets if it'll help your GB move along.

    Kryton Grooves coming back!

Hey there Matt! Mine are still waiting for me at my sisters house. I am really anxious to get home and put one together so I have a Kryton Groove build once again. Sorry to read about the issues caused by the unannounced anodizing. There is one plus though, the outer finish will stay nicer with...

    Airborne laser .. 445nm one ?

That camera could come in useful if you have some lovely neighborhood women that sunbathe in the raw ;)

    Kryton Grooves coming back!

You were the lucky one that ended up with a custom finish right from the factory! More dots woulda been better tho. You'll need to put in a contaminated lens so your laser beam will have polka dots! Bob

    Kryton Grooves coming back!

It could be residue of the machining oil on the surfaces. One or more spring wires with sharp points on the tip, mounted to the driver and contacting the inside of the barrel should work if that is the case. Maybe do 3 of them, at 120 degrees around a round driver to center it. Bent music wire...

CLOSED! Now Distributing ROUND 2!: THE "Skylaser" (laserBtB) groupbuy!

I have dozens each of 9mm IR laser diodes rated for up to 5W CW and C-Mount IR laser diodes rated up to 10W CW. Most of these were sourced from a company that provided IR illuminators and targetting lasers for US military use. They are out there, just not usually found on the hobby laser market...

    Laser starting to get weaker

Yea, Sky uses the same modules as nearly everyone else. Many of those that claim to make their own usually just hand-pick the better ones out of batch buys of the cheapies and sell off the rest in bulk to other companies or on eBay/Alibaba using different company names. Bob

    Laser starting to get weaker

So true. The 532nm green DPSS modules from a few years ago were better made than the ones made now. Back then there was less mass manufacturing going on, so more care was put into each module. Nowadays they make so many that the quality has gone down the tubes even more. The assemblers get paid...

    Kryton Grooves coming back!

For it to be economically feasable, Matt would have to institute a minimum order of a specific number. Otherwise tooling/setup costs could be prohibitive for a small quantity. When working copper there are some issues that are not as much of an issue with aluminum. Pure copper is more gummy in...

    Kryton Grooves coming back!

Ok ok, thank you. If you can arrange it I would like to get 4 of the 5.6mm and 2 of the 9mm. That would be enough for me to rebuild my former Kryton collection and to add a couple of new wavelengths that I didn't have back then. A rectangular driver can be soldered to the diode pins and then...

    Kryton Grooves coming back!

Too bad I can't join in on this one Matt. My direct deposit doesn't go in until the 3rd of the month. Bob

    What diodes are these?

A little tip... Look inside of the window of the laser diode and count the number of bond wires. If there is only one, that is a very good indicator that the laser diode was likely designed to be run at less than 250-300mA CW. There are quite a few dead laser diodes in my gold scrap bin that...

    Laser starting to get weaker

Low end DPSS 532nm laser pointers tend to be inherently unstable, and typically become even more unstable with age. That's to be expected. Bob

    Noob please help

The TO-5 is commonly called a 9mm package. The 1W laser diode is going to have multimode emission, which means that there will be a very high amount of divergence in one axis of emission, much higher than the other. This results in the raw laser diode output looking like a rectangular bar. In...

TAKING PAYMENTS: C6 Copper heat sinks & focus adapters

I had trouble earlier today. The checkout process kept failing when going to PayPal. I could log in but the payment was being rejected every time. It turned out to be a PayPal issue. I had to call them and wait on hold for almost an hour to get them to go in and manually approve the payment. She...
