P=V*I is input power, driver takes care of that. We are more interested in optical power, i.e. intensity of the beam and number of photons. It is measured with LPM. optical power / V*I = efficiency V*I - optical power = waste heat

So, there wasn't a ring around the dot before? Some splash is normal. It however depends on the diode, lens, and lens holder. You might want to post a photo of the output without the lens. It should help with diagnosis. :)

That means the beam is focused to a point in infinity, so the divergence is minimal (photons travel in pretty much parallel lines) and the dot at large range is as small as possible. :) In reality (and in advanced theory), perfect focus and zero divergence are impossible.

Water resistance is one thing, but beware of salt/mineral crystallization if drops of sea water (or hard water) dry out. :) However there will be no problem washing the laser. :D

Some of them (mostly greens) don't even work on 3V, 3.5-4.0V has to be used sometimes. Which is nice if li-ion battery is used.
