Identifying a lens is a lot harder than that. Maybe with more context and/or model numbers somebody could tell. All I can see is that it's a pretty typical doublet lens that's been ground into a rectangular shape which causes the four corners you mention. Other than that, I don't know.

Tarantulas are definitely some of the friendlier spiders. I've only seen them in the wild twice in my life, but I guess it was a lucky day. Kinda arachnophobic myself, but seeing a wild tarantula is neat. They're definitely the "cutest" of the other southwestern arachnids though.

I missed this thread earlier, but the tarantula were migrating over here a couple weeks ago. We don't have big ones this far into the mountains, but this little guy was still a lot more substantial than most common spiders.

Awesome video styropyro! Are you working out of a storage unit now? I agree on the red laser explanation. Saw a very similar demo in an optical engineering class. You should get a filter to block the red and see if you can register the brief increase in light output.
