Feedback on open source laser cutter

Will this be able to do grayscale images like some of the laser engravers?

A common love for lasers. lets help eachother

Seems like it would be a great idea to have an "intro / basic questions" thread where new users could post questions without scorn, and where we could sticky some of the basic level questions (and hopefully not a bunch of other stuff).

    The LazerBlade

Cool! I actually found it very hard to understand how the "partial kit" option worked - possibly because I've only backed a couple projects and don't use the site a lot. But it seemed confusing that this reward was $50,'but then had other costs in the text, some of which were upgrades, but...

List - Existing Visible Wavelength Laser Diodes

Good pricing on Avnet: http://avnetexpress.avnet.com/1/1/10209873-ushio-opto-semiconductors-laser-diode-aigainp-ld-636nm-100mw-3-pin-hl63163dg.html I wonder if DTR can get these for us giving the Ushio diodes he already stocks.

    The LazerBlade

Hey Michelle. Good on you for making your pricing reasonable. Do you have a package that would be everything minus laser diode and laser driver? I can see that appealing to this forum (myself included).

    Possible new and cheep driver.

Those will be constant voltage boost drivers, not constant current, so as a starting point, you'd need a new PCB. While it's possible that you could move some of the parts to a new PCB, the IC likely has a high feedback voltage that wouldn't lend itself to constant current configurations without...

    488nm Direct Diode 20mW CNI-PGL-III-C Custom Build

Nope, not necessarily. In fact, not even likely. Even within the same wavelength, different models have dramatically different curves. Here, you've replied to a thread about a wavelength and diode that is exceedingly rare, and very experimental. It's specs are irrelevant to your challenge...

    488nm Direct Diode 20mW CNI-PGL-III-C Custom Build

Priorities. First, where did you get your 488nm diode?

The REALLY Heavy Load - 30A test load

Two resistor options on this one - 0.1 ohm and 0.01 ohm :)

No longer WTB: C Mount 5W 650nm Laser Diode

Re: WTB: C Mount 5W 650nm Laser Diode I don't sell drivers. However, if you'd promise to scope it and share the results (good or bad) publicly, I'd be happy to give you this one. I don't have a scope, so my "blind" assertion that it's an incredibly clean output may be naive. I would be happy...

Inverting buck/boost - Case Positive Diode Driver

It sounds great, and that's what I initially thought of doing, but start trying to actually implement that, and you'll see that there's no way to drop it into the the inverter circuit such that it doesn't interrupt the V- / LD+ common connection, and creates a voltage at the IC's FB pin that is...

Inverting buck/boost - Case Positive Diode Driver

That's good news. I look forward to your thoughts on how to achieve current regulation without the linear driver tagged on the end. That's what I struggled with.

Inverting buck/boost - Case Positive Diode Driver

I wonder if this works? Everything about it looks wrong, but I think it might work given that the the final output portion is linear regulation... why not regulate on the (-) rail of the LD output.

Inverting buck/boost - Case Positive Diode Driver

Does anyone know how the AMC7135 internally works such that the voltage drop can get so low? Can we replicate that? I thought about using a MOSFET current regulator schematic but swap the transistor for a germanium transistor so that it wouldn't drop 0.7V. But it turns out germanium transistors...

    Case neutral host?

Oh I see what you're saying. I don't want to go the route of counting on anodizing to insulate. I can always isolate intentionally if I want. I don't want to go that route. I want case neutral by physical design.

    Case neutral host?

I've had C6 hosts in the past. Wouldn't be large enough. Also, are you sure the case is neutral? I thought the host body was still used for tailcap feed.

GB: CNC'd Host + Driver for 40 Watt 460-465nm Laser Array

Well, sadly, it doesn't look like there is enough interest from others here to make this fly.

    Case neutral host?

I must be going batty here, because I could swear I posted about this yesterday, but I may have forgotten to hit submit. I'm looking for a case neutral host (IE, a host that doesn't use the case to return a feed from the battery). Does anyone have something that fits that bill? If push comes...
