I'm pretty sure the FDA only steps in when you try to sell your products. The FDA isn't going to go after you for building a prototype that only you are going to use. It's not like building a bomb.

What "other" FDA letters are you talking about? As far as I know, there were two. The first was the fake email Day got and the second was the real letter that Mohrenberg received. The FDA is mostly interested in stopping unlawful sales of lasers. It is the job of US Customs to watch incoming...

Yeah, that was my guess too, based on some earlier testing I did. There was no appreciable current change after about 3V. I stuck a diode in the spacer in order to dissipate some of the heat there instead of at the driver board.

All right, I got my 10440s today, so I built a spacer: The results were pretty darn impressive (~50mW pointer on the right, the FocalPrice pointer on the left). I don't know how long it's going to last, but it'll be fun in the meantime... :) If you're interested in the details...

I purchased DX SKU 91 in September and it had an extremely large aperture. However, it also has a very good driver and reports anywhere from 50-80mW on my photoelectric meter. Yes, it's ridiculously overpowered and was a total fluke. However, it runs on Ni-MH rechargeables without a problem...

My dorm has one of the worst network connections... Other dorms get 30 down / 50 up.

Really nice find pseudolobster! It would be very hard to replicate properly though... You need extremely stable conditions and a totally clean environment. If anyone has access to a cleanroom, maybe they can start making crystals on the side. :D

The threshold current is the minimum current needed for actual lasing IIRC.
