    Sparkfun Free Day results

Yeah, I just checked my credit card balance and the shipping order was charged. After Free Day was over, I was too disgusted to look initially. :)

    Sparkfun Free Day results

This makes no sense. All of a sudden, a package came in the mail today even though I never received a confirmation email. SparkFun Free Day — Suddenly, Success! @ JWC.blog I'm utterly stunned.

How to find out ma of batterry if not listed?

From your post, I'm guessing you don't mean the capacity of the battery (usually in units of mAh--milliamp hours), but rather the maximum current that the batteries are able to put out. You can usually find that information on the web (it depends on the chemistry of the battery). If you want...

Calling All High Power Portable Laser (Green/Blue) Owners

Here you go: Model/Wavelength/Advertised Power S-KY Portable 532nm 300mW Divergence value In my first test, I got 0.57 mRad, but that seems a little low despite the fact that the beam is really nice. It's almost certainly under 1 mRad though. Peak/Avg. power value. peak: 375mW avg: 325mW Is...

    Opinions on new netbook

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA... Man, you brought tears to my eyes. Ubuntu is based off of Debian. Debian is notorious for implementing a ton of absolutely unnecessary services on their default installations. These services waste a ton of resources. Ubuntu takes it a step further by adding even more bloat...

    http://www.techlasers.com/ good or bad?

Techlasers has spammed my blog several times now. I haven't done any investigation as to whether it is a bot or they're having a person post comments, but frankly, the fact that they're spamming tells me quite a bit about a company.

    Beam Shots!!!!

The most powerful (visible) laser I have. Roughly 300mW.

    Fantalaser

To my knowledge, the best anyone has done with a portable has been the Herc. I have yet to see a portable 1W laser. You need very careful temperature regulation and portable hosts cannot provide that.

Forums You Are a Member Of

I used to be a member or mod of various forums over the years, but they've either completed their purpose or are no longer of interest to me. I've also adminned a few in my time. Besides this place, I also frequent the Arch Linux forums, but mostly to lurk. Well, I mostly lurk here, too...

Easy/Creative/New Way to see your beam!

I was subbing for a class once, so I did this with chalkboard erasers. It was epic.

    skylasers 808nm laser pointer

Temperatures won't matter much with an 808nm laser. They simply have output from a diode; there are no DPSS crystals in there that need proper temperature control. You said this was a pointer? Are you using any focusing optics? You'll probably need some.

So.. not sure how many of you have a use for this but..

Such tools are indeed perfectly legal. Frankly, though, it's stupidly easy to reset a password on an unencrypted filesystem. You don't need to modify the kernel to do it; just stick any old "sytem rescue cd" in your CD tray and messing around with the shadow file. None of those tools are...

WARNING: Do not buy HP CQ40-310AU

My first PC was an HP Pavilion N5470. That was back around 2000, right before the AMD Athlon XP processors were branded as such. It still runs really well. The only issue is that that the hard drive screeches a little from old age and that the battery life is crap. HP used to deliver far...

    Scored a 20mhz dual trace w/probes for $54

That's a great buy. I bought a little Tektronix 335 off of eBay last year for about $50 and it has been an invaluable asset. Not a ton of functions, but it's good enough for my purposes.

    SKYlasers Christmas Special!! MASSIVE Discount...

I would like to comment on this. I have a 300mW 532nm SKY portable and its quality is top notch. Its power always exceeds 300mW and after about 40 seconds, the power output is extremely stable. The host is very well designed and made of good materials. The optics are also of good quality. I...

    Sonar Build

Nice job on the sonar. Wait a sec. Hey, I recognize that little black host: http://jwcxz.com/projects/lasers/mxbluray/final1.jpg That was the first laser I built. I machined a heatsink like this: http://jwcxz.com/projects/lasers/mxbluray/hsink_revised1.png This was back in the time of the...

What should I do with this free computer?

You would be surprised at how many users thrive with hardware that's nowhere near as good as what you have listed. Gentoo and Arch are famous for being distributions that run well on even old systems because they have very few services running in the background. I know of people who use...

    Labby Style Heatsinks

If you want something cheap and easy, you can always just find a cheap CPU heatsink and drill a 15/32" hole. It will fit the AixiZ modules pretty well; a little thermal grease or thermal glue would help too.
