Bad, bad, bad idea. These ultra-high capacity drives fail like crazy. A friend of mine bought a 1TB drive and the very next day, bad sectors started showing up. A lot of data has been lost to these drives. Running them in RAID 0 is even scarier because you have twice the chance of failure...

I'd say go for an RGB laser, but maybe I'm biased since that's what I want to make. It would definitely involve a somewhat longish build time, since collimating and combining the three beams will be a difficult and very careful task. Also, you'll probably get to machine your own parts. :)

This looks like it could make a fantastic host (albeit a bit expensive). Any non-US buyers want to buy one and open it up? You could probably sell the module for a pretty good price (maybe $15-20 if it's 30mW) and then use the host for a nice red, blu-ray, or high-power green.
