    LPF Upgrade

I guess the 'likes' feature somewhat mitigates the lack of the 'rep' feature, though there is no 'dislike' option so i presume i can only count up? I seem to have some likes - i wonder how those were calculated from the previous system, though i don't care that much about either.

    Car problems

It depends a bit on what the actual cause of the sensor failure was - maybe the rainstorm and some water ingestion actually damaged both sensors in a similar fashion. If you have a good repair shop available just go there, reasonable chances they've seen the same problem before and know how they...

    New look

I used to prefer the dark background scheme as well, but with the larger font and decent contrast i don't mind the current light layout as much as i did the the old one. It would be nice to have it as an option though :) One thing i noticed: It doesn't seem to keep me logged in even when i...

Desired Specification for a new Driver?

Yeah, it's more than just a little function creep to realize this ;) I think it can be done with relatively low cost, low power uC's however: If they run at 8 MHz and you're doing PWM at 100 kHz you have 80 clock cycles between any 2 transitions. This is probably sufficient to read a parameter...

New site live - please report any questions/issues here

It surely is a new fresh look, cool :) One thing i miss is the section of most recent posts across the board on the homepage, would be nice to have that restored as i often use it to see if there is any activity in topics i'm participating in at a quick glance.

    685nm and 690nm laser diodes

I suppose collecting wavelengths would be the only reason. At some point it just becomes very dim and you may change your description of the color. Things like orange and brown are essentially the same wavelength mix, with the difference just being the brightness. Then again we don't usually...

What a cheap laser can do, Beware!

Yeah, that's the problem. The cheapest way to make them is doing as you describe and then ship out those units that lase at all (if they do quality control at all). Then again, most customers would probably be disappointed if you actually delivered them a 532 nm laser with a power guaranteed...

Desired Specification for a new Driver?

I think the 'generic 8 pin chip' just refers to microcontrollers that are used in many devices, even just led decorative lights that can do various brightness amount or turn on for 6 hours a time and then off for the next 18 to keep repeating the cycle - this is the stuff you find in dollar...

    some "new" pics 9/15/18

Very cool indeed! Some of those photo's look better than CGI from recent sci-fi movies. 5732 could easily pass for the 'reactor core' of some alien spacecraft :) 5827 looks like some kind of teleporter or perhaps time travel machine to me. I know the setup isn't that large, but in some...

Desired Specification for a new Driver?

The topology demands will be variable of course - in some situations you clearly need to buck or boost, in some it may be required to be able to do both (i.e. when the forward voltage of your laser is lower than the start voltage of your battery, but higher than it's cut-off point). One thing...

Test of diodes in NUBM08 block all at once

Oh i'm sure there is pretty much power in the individual beams - if you power only one of the diodes in the block you'd probably also be able to melt plastic at the same distance. You'd just get 1 somewhat narrower hole instead of this messy combined pattern. Also, will you be repainting the...

    Direct driving nubm44 with 1 or 2 18650 ?

I don't do that to laser diodes, but i guess one reason would also be 'too complicated'. The drivers are inexpensive, the host most likely has enough space for one, but if you have no idea what you're doing you may just connect it up directly as the forward voltage of the laser diode is so...

What a cheap laser can do, Beware!

I'd say the general public would see it like this: you can give a 10 year old a small had saw to cut branches off trees, do some woodworking or whatever. Such a saw is potentially dangerous, it wouldn't be difficult to saw off a finger with one, but not in a single go. A laser is more like...

What a cheap laser can do, Beware!

Staring into the sun is one of those things: I -can- do rapid damage to your eyes under "ideal" conditions, if you are in the tropics and do it at noon on a cloudless day. In such cases you may suffer some eye damage if you actively tried to do this. But under -most- conditions starting into...

    Direct driving nubm44 with 1 or 2 18650 ?

I'd agree on this thermal runaway not being likely (though not impossible). It's more likely that the battery voltage would sag under the load to the point where you get less them optimum output power, but everything survives the ordeal. This is, sort of, depending on the concept that poor...

What a cheap laser can do, Beware!

It depends: If it is sold as a 'toy' you should probably assume it's fairly safe. Then again there are countless kids that get lego pieces stuck up their noses every year, but extracting them usually leaves no permanent damage. I'm sure some of you grew up in fairly suburbain area's and did...

Laser glow in the dark clock

Yeah, it's cool how people sometimes do on an idea that seems a bit silly from the start, but actually works out well. It's also nice that those galvo's can run a such a slow rate whilst still being accurate... not something technically difficult to do, but as the manufacturer probably never...

Test of diodes in NUBM08 block all at once

Those look both horrible as beams (to be expected from multimode), but also pretty badly aligned among eachother too. From the beam pattern you'd almost thing it was 3 rows of diodes instead of two :D

What a cheap laser can do, Beware!

It can be of -huge- importance in cases of bodily harm caused by products. So far the UK is part of the EU, and there are rules about product liability here. The product responsibility lies with the "legal" manufacturer of a product in the EU. If you import something (as a business) from...

    Direct driving nubm44 with 1 or 2 18650 ?

Yeah, 2 cells in series would just make a very brief bright flash and destroy the diode, unless the cells are -so bad- that their internal resistance actually limits the current to an acceptable level. I don't see that happening with proper quality cells at all, but if you get them for $0.99...
