Review of the Tinker Lasers Valkyrie 488

My buddy in the lab confirms this is kind of a weird diode. Below 65 degrees F it puts out something very close to a single mode beam, speckle and all. But as it warms up it's linewidth gets bigger and bigger. I'm still looking up exactly what this means but my lab guy says at 95 degrees F...

    Hello from Ukraine!

Hi Ivan! Try the Tinker Tavern Valkyrie line of lasers. I got a 488nm, but they have many wavelengths to choose from, including yellow!

Have you seen what gallium does to aluminum? 👹😈

We might get up into the swealtering mid 80's later this week.

Review of the Tinker Lasers Valkyrie 488

I'll ask my buddy in the lab @ work to spectro the thing for me. Gonna cost me a six pack though

Review of the Tinker Lasers Valkyrie 488

Hmm, I wonder if they all use the same diode. One of my go-to visual effects is shining a laser into a big selenite crystal. With a single mode laser I get wicked speckle. With my Valkyrie.......might as well be a bright LED. Compare a good 532 DPSS green through a diffuser to a 445...

Review of the Tinker Lasers Valkyrie 488

Diffusers are great with single mode diodes. Love the trippy look of speckle :-) But this laser has very little/no speckle which is one of the reasons I'm sure it's not single mode. It's either a mystery diode, or that poor little 60mW diode loses it's single mode goodness when overdriven to...

Some questions about some new lasers from tinker tavern

You tell me :-) It also has no discernable speckle at all.

Just press the button on a laser 303 anywhere in my house and you'll have a playful amstaff in front of you in mere seconds. She can hear the switch click!

Some questions about some new lasers from tinker tavern

I don't think the Tinker 488 is the GH04850B2G diode. That's a single mode diode, and my new toy is definitely not single mode.

Some questions about some new lasers from tinker tavern

Nope, it's a direct diode 488. The focus ring is very low profile which makes it a bit difficult to use. If it were a higher power laser I'd have to turn it off to move the focus ring without singing my fingertips. The threads on the ring are a bit loose so when it's unscrewed a bit the ring...

Some questions about some new lasers from tinker tavern

I recently reviewed their 488nm Valkyrie pointer and I'm pretty happy with it. I DO wish there was more technical information on their page though, so I hear you there. But from the things I've read on this forum people seem pretty happy with their purchases. The quality of the laser I...

    Cats and Dogs

Weirdest thing I've ever had chase a dot was a wolf spider. This was over 20 years ago, watching the spider chase the dot from a dollar store keychain red across my ceiling..... It felt almost like a pet.....for a few minutes :)

    Cats and Dogs

That's how we picked one of our rescues. I dotted the far wall of the room. Three of about a dozen puppies noticed, but only one got up to go check out the 'thing' on the wall. I used curiosity as a proxy for a smart dog. Seems to have worked out well!

Review of the Tinker Lasers Valkyrie 488

I'm a pretty satisfied customer :) If I could have one thing added to the kit it would be to trade one (or all) of the star caps for a cap with a plain AR coated window to keep dust outta those nice clean optics. The collimating lens is sort of 'down in the hole' and isn't going to be easy to...

Review of the Tinker Lasers Valkyrie 488

Hi Giannis, sorry to nitpick one detail of what is, in every other aspect, an awesome host! I really like the heft of the stainless. It feels solid in the hand, like this is something that is going to last. And with this particular diode it has enough thermal mass for close to unlimited run...

Review of the Tinker Lasers Valkyrie 488

With my birthday coming up my wife said I should treat myself to a new laser (LOVE that woman!). I thought about a yellow pointer but I already have yellow. I saw that the Valkyrie 488 was on sale (and 250mW) and I didn't have that wavelength yet so..... The package: The laser came well...
