Hi, I just replaced the driver in one of my 445nm 9mm lasers with a CC-Boost designed by rhd and lpf. I was setting the current when I realized I goofed. Instead of a single 18650, I had put in two 16340's. Here's the weird part: it worked pretty well. No smoke, smell, or any fried circuitry...

I may be wrong, but I think it would work to simply drill four 18650 sized holes in the host rather than one big one if u see what I'm saying. The machinist would need to ensure that the positive battery contact touched all four batteries, and it would be easy to make the negatives all connect...

Just be sure that the rating you are looking at is for constant drain, not pulsed. But yes, since you have four in parallel, should be a fourth of the total drain on each. That's a lot of batteries :)

That would be awesome if you started making these. I've always wanted one, but they're hard to find for the types of builds I have. I can't help much, but this got me thinking of the possibilities. You could make hosts with integrated beam expanders specially designed for each laser! :drool:

I have heard that at that high current, even panasonics (the NCR ones) get warm, which is not a good sign. IWIRE tested several types and I believe concluded that imren was better for high amperage (as in it was the only one that did not get warm) at the cost of a few hundred mah. He was...

Yeah... Bad news. That's not what it should look like at all. I would say the diode is the problem. Could it have overheated? I don't know at this point, never seen this before. Hopefully someone else can help, sorry.

What kind of lens are you using? Check that first. It could be cracked. Can you post a pic of the raw output (no lens)? If there is no diminished brightness, I wouldn't think its the diode.

Cool! I may have to sell another laser just in case you do. :) Do you have any experience with Everbrite on aluminum? I picked some up for a copper build, so I might try that.

I really like this one, too. Single 18650 hosts are nice because you have more options for buck/boost drivers. It would look amazing polished to a mirror finish.
