What are the best science fiction movies?

No one has mentioned Outland starring Sean Connery from 1981, an excellent SciFi movie, see it if you haven't. Alan

What temp do you solder at?

Well that is a strange one, maybe the Chinese are using a new metal alloy that doesn't work well for a soldering iron. Alan

What music does LPF listen to?

I certainly do remember those. I can't believe something from 1984 or 1985 is enough to make you feel old. I was named Alan after the astronaut Alan Shepard, I was alive durring the Cuban missile crises, I remember watching the last Gemini mission on TV, years later I got to see and sit in one...

    Military coup in Turkey.

I don't believe we are currently doing much to fight ISIS anyway but a few other countries are. ISIS is preparing for the fall of the Caliphate, they are conducting classic asymmetrical warfare. The Caliphate may fall, but a new one will rise, they just need the right leader to come along. One...

What temp do you solder at?

Even cheap irons usually come with one extra tip. What do you mean wear down and turn into a nub? I have never seen this before. They can corrode over time and stop getting hot enough, be sure to tin the tip and wipe it on a sponge or with a damp cloth and keep it clean and the tips should last...

    Military coup in Turkey.

I have been listening to coverage of this for several hours now. There is a small chance this could be catastrophic on a biblical scale. This could lead to civil war in Turkey, if that happens then ISIS and the Kurds might decide to take advantage of this, you don't want to think about the...

    Need help building laser pointer

That site has been around for years and several people here regularly build in that host, I would not recommend a site you can't trust. That site is also the original source of the G2 lens. I have never built a laser in a pen host, I have always used larger hosts, as far as I know you don't need...

    Need help building laser pointer

That is not a 50mW laser diode module, it is a DPSS module, these come in 3V and 5V, this one is a 3V, notice the button on the driver. This is specifically made for use in a pen host that uses 2 AAA batteries, that button turns it on and off. If you connect it to a 3V source you can test it to...

What temp do you solder at?

Well when referring to a sah-during iron I say Sah-dur, or when Sah-during something I say Sah-dur, but the wire stuff we use I call solder, this might not be correct either but who cares. Alan

What temp do you solder at?

Maybe it's easy because of the plastic dispenser because you can just pull it out the top and always see how much is left instead of using a spool. Alan

What temp do you solder at?

Found it: Lead-Free Rosin Core Solder it says melting point is 422.6F, you would find the 60/40 or 63/37 easier to work with. Alan

What temp do you solder at?

I have never heard of "easy solder" and can't find it in searches on Harbor Freight or anywhere else, but I do know the standard 60/40 as well as lead free solder come packaged that way. It is probably just the standard 60/40 as the lead free would not be labeled easy, it has a higher melting...

    Anyone Wet Shave?

Probably nothing is too strange for this forum, as long as it's in the Off-Topic > Other area. BTW what brand of toilet paper does everyone use? I use Scott 1000. Oops that is a topic for another thread. Just kidding don't anyone answer that. GR3EN, it looks like you may be interested...

August 27 when it makes its next close pass, I suppose a couple of days after that when it swings back out again before it transmits its data but it should be really good. Alan

    Anyone Wet Shave?

Haven't wet shaved for about 35 years, I prefer an electric razor. I currently use a rotary razor, Remington or Norelco are good brands that work very good, it is a nuisance though to take them apart and clean them every several times you shave. A few years ago I had a Panasonic wet/dry electric...

    Space Discussion Thread

Yes I have heard of it, anyone who is a fan of Star Trek or who listens to professor Mechio Kaku will be familiar with it. The subject also comes up sometimes on several radio shows that talk about science and space or UFOs/aliens. Here is a small update on Juno from three days ago...
