Just curious, why do you want a 1W handheld particularly? You can get lower powered handhelds and higher powered labbies for much cheaper. While I don't know much about scanners, I'd imagine $1000 would get you quite a nice one. Or you could buy a gas laser and get some exotic colours or ungodly...

Out of curiousity, what did you usedd to do with lasers? Look at the dot up-close while burning a lot, or take reflections frequently? And what sorts of powers?

Ok, personally I prefer cardboard to burn, although the other day I did use my 445nm laser to cut a sheet of paper in half. I'm personally finding this sheild hard to visualise though. Is it a long box made of clear, IR-blocking material? If so, possibly not appropriate since this operation...
