Best power to cut paperand other thin materials without it burning?

40W focused IR, beamed onto construction paper, with OXYGEN flowing into the cut..... What part of the FIRE triangle is missing here??? (heat, fuel, oxidizer)

Question about a powerful blue laser

Good man, Now, you don't want a big, bad, blue for astronomy (shock and awe, burning, whatever). Like Hak said, start with parts for a small wattage blue (much cheaper diode), or a RED (even cheaper), build one of those, then work up to your killer blue. You WILL kill one or more along the...

Question about a powerful blue laser

If you can't take the heat, get out of the kitchen. Try listening to what he is saying, rather than trying to keep the chip on your shoulder. Hak is a little brusk at times, but he knows far more than you do about the subject, so you would do far better listening and learning. But then, if...

Question about a powerful blue laser

Blue is a BAD idea for serious astronomy. To get enough power to have a reasonable beam for pointing, you'll have too much local brightness and screw up your night vision. If you are REALLY talking about an astronomy LASER get w 30-50mW Green module and build with that.

How does heat shorten laser life?

Actually, in an incandescent lamp, and in addition to crystalization caused by the thermal changes,,, it is the physical shock from voltage changes when turning on/off repeatedly.

Can reflections kill a laser diode?

Google Catostrophofic Optical Destruction (or Damage). Power reflected back into the chamber causes thermal and physical shock to the die, resulting in chipping or deformation of the lasing surface. ,,, so,,, yea, it is possible.

    Laserglow Lyra safety vs brightness?

Most green pointers are DiodePumpedSolidState (DPSS), which means that I.R. ,from the LASER diode, is pumped through a crystal structure to mechanicaly change the wavelength of the output, to obtain the green light. They typically use a much higher optical power I.R. diode, as is is a...

    Laser Parking Lines

Depending upon the angle of offset from a perpendicular of the emitter (and depending upon placement of the emitter with respect to the floor), the 'remaining xxx feet of the line' could be equal to as little as zero. Yes, LASERs would be more flexible than grooving (not part of your original...

    Laser Parking Lines

LASER projection will get interrupted by anyone/anything comming between emitters and target. Grove the concrete with a concrete saw and paint the grooves (or inlay a metal strip).

Cutting glass into tiny pieces to fit into lens barrel.

Marco, Mind you, the sizes are the bore size of the hole created, not the 'plug' removed. And, use A LOT of water to keep things cool. Search for info on Lapidary supplies like corundum grit for shaping and polishing. If nothing else, use water and 600 grit wet/dry sand-paper to clean up the edges.

Thermal paste between a diode module an heatsink?

The fear on Heatsink dope (thermal paste, TIM, Silicon paste) is getting it on the diode window, or in an open can). If you are sloppy, you will effectively ruin your diode. If you are carefull, why not use every bit of insurance that you can?

Physicists Find Way to Convert Light into Matter

"Is there any practical application to this?" ARE YOU KIDDING???????? Alchemist have been trying to do this for melinea (sp?). They just didn't have the lasers and were too primitive to realize that they were using Lead instead of Gold. Gold + laser + Gold + laser = Gold!!!!! Ureka!

I killed my new IR laser

Even if it was a miserable I.R., I fail to see how you would think someone woul enjoy hearing how you coldly and maliceously MURDERED a poor, defencless laser diode. For shame! Have you no regard for the sanctity of life? "i pushed on a resistor and saw that the amp meter jumped" indicates a...

    LM3914 volt meter wiring problem

You 'measure voltage' on unloaded battery, apply a load and 'measure' again, then wonder why the level sags when the battery is loaded?? It's working like it is supposed to. Wait and see how it goes down when you have run the battery down some...
