The potentiometer on the white power supply is used to tune the amount of voltage passing through the HeNe tube. Most likely it's been tuned already for that specific HeNe tube. I really wouldn't touch it unless 18V does not power up the tube.

No prisms, but I do have tons of mirrors, diffraction gratings, and the such. Only problem is that I'm separated from these beauties until March (no room for them at college, sob).

Are you sure capacitors are the way to go? I feel like lead-acid batteries might work better (especially since their voltage doesn't drop with their charge).
