You think lasers are a for fun?

I am glad we agree, Eudaimonium. I also agree that a thread such as you have described would be very helpful. My only problem is that it is near anathema to start such a thread if you aren't a 'long-timer' here. (this is probably a good thing, in most circumstances). If you start the thread...

You think lasers are a for fun?

Eudaimonium: Hmmm.... I do see what you are saying, and to tell the truth, I agree far more than you may believe. I still do not use goggles for daytime 'lasering' or pointing. I am trying to make a point that may often go underestimated, more importantly, under reported due to embarrassment...

You think lasers are a for fun?

Some responses: Magmabeam: I will see if I can give you a report, but since I have not seen an optometrist in years, it is not likely. While nearly all the veterans and many of the newcomers do not doubt the power and danger, many of them underestimate the problem. The problem is that the...

You think lasers are a for fun?

OK, here is a pretty close approximation of the damage I have done!

You think lasers are a for fun?

This is a copy of another response I posted in the ubiquitous FAIL thread, but I really think it deserves re-posting here: My initial instinct was to 'lol' but that wouldn't have been right. If nothing else, I have a really long history in eye damage. Something I'm not proud of. When I was 13...

    FAIL THREAD!!!!

My initial instinct was to 'lol' but that wouldn't have been right. If nothing else, I have a really long history in eye damage. Something I'm not proud of. When I was 13 I was told that I could view a solar eclipse through a hole in a piece of paper; I looked through that hole and the next...

    FAIL THREAD!!!!

I can't even begin to express how glad I am that I didn't blind anyone else (or myself). Lesson learned.

    FAIL THREAD!!!!

This is kind of hard for me to admit, but a couple nights ago it was really foggy. This is very unusual here in Colorado; we normally only get a couple foggy nights per year. I am nearing the completion of a 3 x 445nm build and wanted to see it 'glow'. Unfortunately, I had had a few drinks as...

    Flexmod P3 TO-220 ID?

I just wanted to provide an update to this thread for anyone that may find themselves in this predicament. I received the parts that I had ordered from DigiKey (see above), and soldered in one of them. Total and complete success! Thanks for the info rhd. +rep'd!

    Hey Guys!

I don't know what the laws are in your neck of the woods, but here 5mW is the most you could use. But if it's green, it's enough. The laser shouldn't be on the same level as the birds, it should be located above, since you need to create a quickly (but not to quick) moving dot that sweeps...

    Hey Guys!

I disagree. 1 x 5mW green laser will scatter a 1000 geese in under 20 seconds. Hell, on a real dark night you can do the same with a cheap 5mW red laser. That's several football fields worth of birds. I'd suggest getting a <5mW laser and go do some field research. Just make sure you- Don't...

    Hey Guys!

I used to live next to a golf course that would use bottle rockets several times a day/night to disperse Canada geese. Knowing just how efficient lasers are at instantly filling the sky with cloud bound birds, I figured I'd try and market some low power green lasers to the golf courses. I...

Building a ND:YAG from eBay parts

OK, well I was looking at the local gig listings on Craigslist when I came across this ad: Build an Nd:YAG Laser Marking Sys (I swear I wasn't searching for laser related posts:whistle:) I only wish I had the skill and resources to take this gig... Best job listing I've ever seen! Anyway, I...

Anyone else notice that Nichia's 445 spec sheet got a power boost last month?

Yeah, price might still be bit of an issue.

Anyone else notice that Nichia's 445 spec sheet got a power boost last month?

After reading the OP I thought something sounded very familiar here. I just remembered I read a thread at PL about this very same diode. Here is a link so since there is no such thing as too much knowledge. Any interest in 1,6W 445nm NDB7875 Nichia diode?

    FAIL THREAD!!!!

I saw a video of one of those lasers being profiled using an acrylic block. This thing was BIG. It only took about 2 seconds to burn a 2" deep x 1.5" diameter hole. It had to be many kilowatts. It must have smelled like a crematorium when that guy decided to be part of the block.:barf:
