Just ordered the Cyber 445nm – 500mw focusable waterproof laser pointer

True, but he also asked about reviews on the seller and there are tons of those around. IMO the specific "500mw" does not matter, being that the only difference is power output. The Cyber host itself has been reviewed a few times, and if he has to see 500mw there are a few topics with lasers...

    First Laser. VERY IMPRESSED

Well it's red so it should be around 635-ish. Goggles should come in a few ranges of wavelength so find one that contains that. Eagle Pair® 190-400nm & 580-760nm Laser Safety Goggles

    First Laser. VERY IMPRESSED

If it burns you definitely need eye protection. If not, your eyes may be damaged from specular reflections.

    100mW O-Like Power Rock pics

I believe that was where their original design came from? Don't quote me on this one, I just read that somewhere. When someone was selling multiple hosts, and had taken one apart in anticipation of building a variable power laser, but never got around to it. They pointed out that the Sunway Man...

    35mW vs 55mW Viper Series

5mW will be visible at night, won't be starting any fires though. If you can light things on fire then you will need safety goggles. If just pointing at the sky then they are not AS needed but still recommended. Anything above 5mW should require safety goggles. ~100mW are needed for burning...

When & where did the term 'host' originate?

It almost seems to be using this definition. Host (biology), organism harboring another organism on or in itself. So the housing is a host for the laser diode and components?

    What can this laser do?

Yes, unless it's way overspec. 50mW+ can pop balloons.

    Laser as in-home Self Defense?

First of all, thanks for posting in a dead thread. Two years old, in fact. Second, have fun trying to shine a pinpoint of light at someone while they're running at you with a knife. Unless you're a sharpshooter (which you're not, since guns aren't an option), there's a very little chance you're...

    Zombie attack in Miami??

I'm terribly sorry, maybe that was what that guy was forced to sit through before he became cannibalistic? 10 hour marathon of fun sparkly twilight.

Still a better story than twilight.
