Hey guys, this is my first post and I had some questions about buying a laser pointer...I want to buy a laser that can pop a balloon and would be visible at night and in lit areas (not broad daylight). I have read the guide to buying your first laser but got confused :\
i looked at the grab bag thing that surf has and thought the grab bag deal was a good value but i dont want to end up getting one that's too weak to pop a balloon...i would be willing to get that if you could share any experiences you've had with it? Or any other ideas, I'm 14 so my budget is ~$20...if it would cost more to buy from elsewhere (not the grab bag) i could wait a few months and raise the budget to $50

So first things first is, wherever you get your first laser from, make SURE that you have safety goggles. I know I got my first laser before I got a job (I was 17 at the time), and I couldn't raise enough money. So I asked for it for Channukah. I got one of the ones from rayfoss.com, one of the "lower-end" high quality laser resellers. Nonetheless, you aren't going to get anything decent, with good goggles, for that cheap. I suggest waiting until your birthday or Christmas or whatever and ask for one then.
 
Any ideas of how much it would be? I have the money, I'm just being stingy :whistle: and as for safety goggles I don't plan on pointing it at someone, their eyes are out of the question...so just looking at the beam is hazardous to your eyes?
 
i saw that rayfoss had protective goggles for $12, so I can get those...just how much would a laser able to pop balloons cost?

No, not the beam itself. But when using any laser over 5 mW you should wear safety goggles. All it takes is for the beam to reflect off something and into your eye and it can damage your eye faster than you could blink.

You got confused reading a guide which was intentionally dumbed down to help people who are not technologically inclined?

And I'm supposed to trust you with a high powered laser?

I'm sorry sir but if you cannot understand basic information handed to you on a silver platter which has "Google" and "Laserpointerforums" logos laser-engraved on it, you are not a right person for this hobby.

It's not so much anyone elses eyes, its your eyes. Reflections can happen on surfaces that you wouldn't expect, I would know, my room is full of trophy's and shiny glass things. I point around with my 5mw and it points in my eyes all the time, so I try to stick to pointing at the walls. If you don't get saftey goggles, then you should start saving up for the docter visits when you loose vision in one of your eyes:crackup:.
 
I searched around on Google and other forums and the websites they recommended had lasers upwards of $200...as for the guide it says for burning you need 95+mw and I was confused as to what it meant by duty cycle...additionally, I live in the US so I know lasers greater than 5mw are illegal unless they have FDA approval so I wanted to know of some sites that would resend your laser in case customs seized it, you know a 100% satisfaction guaranteed type of policy

Okay, well if you want that policy, NOVA lasers does that. but they are way over your budget. I would go with a reliable company, LAZERER . It's the best most reliable cheap website around as of right now. I havn't heard of anyone having any problems with customs. (they put flashlight torch on the package). And where-ever you heard that you need a 95mw to burn, is completely wrong! All you need is a focus-able 50mw to burn, and you can light matches. Lazerer is also over-spec(meaning that a 50mw will actually be around 60-65mw) most of the time.

Look bel I'm 14 too ...... Some advice your parents are going to be a lot more willing to let you have lasers if your safe and get saftey goggles
 
$20? I spent $275 on my first big laser (granted, I'm 16 and got a 1.2W one with some upgrades and glasses), but $20 is way too little, especially since you need glasses.

Raise it to $60 at least, maybe more if you want more power or better goggles.

agreed i spent like 70 bucks on my first laser and i built it + my $45 saftey glasses if you want a laser just to pop bloons and for 20 bucks ZippoCaseMuseum.com | The official Zippo® online store

a lighter burns well very well

Ok, so I have convinced my dad, all I need to do is find out how much it will be...basically I want a pair of safety goggles, and a laser pointer which can light matches and pop balloons for the best price...Thanks in advance
