You need to collimate the lasers beam or it will diverge and look like a LED. For the dvd diode, you need to put it in module, aixiz modules are generally used for 5.6mm case diodes and they have a lens included, and then hook the driver up which supplies the necessary current for the diode.....if this sound crazy get on to dealsextreme.com or o-like and purchase a 5mw-50mw green laser module, there cheap and all you need to do is hook up 3v ( 2x AAA or AA ) and away it goes, generally they have a visibly beam in the dark too, which will be better than the 10mw red diode you looking at above. :)
Good luck!

hi if i make a laserdoi (????) need some sort of special lens module or if i just get a dvd burner diode and hook it straight to a driver will it be a beam or led? do i need a housing for this?

What you really need to do is a little research on the Forum...
You seem to be missing the basics of lasers and laser building..
If you read the Stickies and Laser build Tutorials most of your
questions will become clear... and you won't be blowing a lot of
Laser Diodes needlessly...

Here are just 2 quickly found Threads that may help...

Welcome to the forum. I can see that you've got a few posts, so you are used to the forum. These issues are well covered here, use search, check the stickies and FAQ's, there is loads of info on what needs to be done to set up a DVD burner diode. You need aixiz module with lens, and a driver (DDL, rkcstr, lavadrive - depends on your chosen power source). Follow the links lasersbee provided ...

hi my pop is a scientist and he has given me a circuit that only uses a 180 ohm resister is this good.
cheers

So much about reading stickies and FAQ...

Dude, you should ask your dad to explain the concept of electrical energy to you.
Batteries are constant voltage source.
Laser diodes need constant current source.

This is done via current regulation circuits.
Read info that was given to you on a silver platter few posts up there, and ask your dad about it. As a scientist he should have no trouble with basic schematics we commonly use here for small lasers.

ok cheers sorry.
anyone know a trusted seller selling a few axis laser modules i believe u plug ur laser in then attach to ur driver, i would be happy to buy a few at a time .
cheers
p.s for cheap

First, stop using "U" instead of "you" , it get's annoying after a while.
Second, it's not axiz, it's "AixiZ", and you can buy directly from them ,
They sell a pack of 10 housings for $25.50

If that's too much for you, look up on
Modwerx.com
Hightechdealz.com
stonetek.org

They have smaller quantities available.

Third, a LASER is acronym for
Light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation,

But, therm is commonly used to describe a handheld or laboratory style unit that is capable of producing coherent light, it goes without saying that it's fully assembled and working.

So, you do not plug your laser anywhere.
You must pressfit a laser diode into the diode pocket in the Aixiz housings, apply constant current to your laser diode via driver, and assemble everything into some sort of case that is commonly reffered to as "host" here.
Only after all that, it's a laser.
Laser diode is the heart of the laser. But it's only a diode and without proper equipement, it's useless.

I know it's difficult to read all the information available to you, but doing so you will greatly imrpove your knowledge not only on laser systems, but also on electronics and optics.
That also means that nobody will have to answer questions like those you are just posting.

Information and knowledge is right in front of you.
You just need to read it.
